Hi all, I have updated a suse8 server to 9.2 (reinstalled, and put data and users back on). I am having trouble to get a IDE-tapedrive recognised and working. First of all, you have the command backwards. -f expects a tape device, and 'status' isn't a device :) Have you tried simply mt -f /dev/hdd status ?

Don't use ide-scsi with the latest 9.2. It is now part of
mount or whatever. It seems to be automatically found.
Just the normally device name like /dev/hdc and not /dec/sr0.

linux:/var/log # mt -f /dev/hdd status mt: /dev/hdd is not a character special file linux:/var/log # mt -f /dev/ht0 status mt: /dev/ht0: Input/output error There is definitely a difference when I use /dev/ht0 in this command. There is also a link between hdd and ht0 in /var/log/messages when I try to see the tape. Aha. In the file "/usr/src/linux/README.SUSE" you can read what that means. section "SUPPORTED VS. UNSUPPORTED MODULES".
Apr 1 19:00:26 linux kernel: ide-tape: Use drive hdd with ide-scsi emulation and osst. Apr 1 19:00:26 linux kernel: ide-tape: OnStream support will be removed soon from ide-tape!
This is very important: it is telling you explicitly that you have to use ide-scsi emulation and osst. Further, "OnStream support will be removed soon from ide-tape!" Clearer, water. Or whatever you say in English :-) Read my other post, please, I gave you some ideas there. You will have to tinker with initrd, probably add ide-scsi and osst. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

It is "ide-scsi", not "ide_scsi". You need to add it to initrd. Edit "/etc/sysconfig/kernel" and add it to the list of modules; for example: INITRD_MODULES="reiserfs ide-scsi raid1" then run mkinitrd. After reboot, check the /var/log/boot.msg file. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

I fought this ide-scsi problem with SuSE9.2 for a full weekend until someone on this list said "forget it" I did. Rebooted and the 2 IDE CDroms are found with (as root only) "cdrecord --scanbus dev=ATAPI:0,0" then: # lsmod | grep s* sg 25564 0 st 36636 0 sd_mod 13200 0 sr_mod 14052 0 Carlos E. R. wrote:

Remember to run "SuSEconfig" if you add something to /etc/sysconfig/*
It is "ide-scsi", not "ide_scsi". You need to add it to initrd. Edit "/etc/sysconfig/kernel" and add it to the list of modules; for example:
