[opensuse] Re: new 'man' behavior: "ask questions instead of answer": HOWTO REVERT?
See Thread at: http://www.techienuggets.com/Detail?tx=86440 Posted on behalf of a User There is xman too, if one hates to type on the command line. The man format is not the largest problem, but what's there to read. Some man pages are simply horrible, simply straight lists of tech-speak description of options and system variables. Other are pedagogical gems, studded with realistic examples that include "just what I want" kinda stuff. I used OpenBSD for a couple of years. The OpenBSD developers have decided that the man-pages of OpenBSD should be the ultimative source of info about OpenBSD (apart from the source code itself), and they are very good. Some questions cannot possibly, even in theory, be answered by a reference manual, regardless of format. Reference manuals are, after all, reference manuals. For other type of questions, there are HOW-TO:s, FAQ:s etc. As for MAN_POSIXLY_CORRECT, it isn't there to see in the man page for man in openSuSE 11.1. Very frustrating. Cheers Johannes S. In Response To: In SuSE 11.1, the behavior of man seems to be "broken" If one wanted all man pages, the manpage for man says to use "man -a", else it gives the first one found. It says nothing about asking a question. How do I turn off the question and have it just show me the first one found again? Is the search order able to be specified? Like I'd prefer it return commands from sections 1 and 8 before API pages. But the bit about asking a question is very 'un-unix like'... more like...um....Windows? like delete default settings: (are you sure you want to move doodoo-file to Trash?, yes/no) Well, don't ask, just do! :-) I want my man to give me it's best answer, not equivocate and ask more questions! :-) thanks, linda -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+noway@spam.com For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+noway@spam.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
