vi ;-) vi can be used for just about anything. It does some wonderful syntax highlighting, etc. and is fast - very fast. I currently use KWrite 2.0 but miss having NoteTab Pro (Windows). Anyone know of anything that comes close? M

I've not used that one, but I have a couple 'o' suggestions: - Kate: Native KDE, and seems pretty good - Scintilla: Basically an editor widget, used by SciTE and other editors. I'm really impressed with the massive language support, IDE functions, and code-completion. See http://www.scintilla.org Shawn Gordon mentioned that TheKompany was working on a KDE editor based on Scintilla and they use Scintilla in BlackAdder, but I have not seen an editor yet. Does anybody know anything about this? Has anybody else made a native KDE Scintilla editor? I couldn't find one and I really can't stand that damn GTK file dialog... -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com

Thanks for these. I'll have to wait until SuSE 7.3 (and KDE 2.2) before I try
Kate but it looks promising.

Personally I think vi is hazardous to one's health!! It's probably more than 20 years old now, and it was designed for the days of very primitive text terminals. The biggest objection I have to vi is how vulnerable it is to typing errors. If you hit the wrong key when you're in text mode, you can easily start issuing commands unintentionally and totally mess yourself up. Personally I use Emacs, though many people find it to be overkill. XEmacs is a popular and lighter-weight alternative. I'm sure there are others out there, but I haven't had any motivation to investigate them. But one of the most basic things I'd look for in any modern editor is the ability to move around the screen with the cursor keys and to make changes at the cursor location without having to switch modes. Given the speed of modern computers, I don't think speed is an issue with any reasonable editor. Paul

Religious fanaticism aside, I use jEdit. It's free, works on several languages, is GUI, has a decent interface and a decent supply of features. It uses java and starts up slow, but if you start it with -daemon, any restart is faster. I'm no fan of Java apps, but it's the best I've found so far. David
Ah, the battle rages on. Just so you know, I'm in the vi camp. I use vim for work since I have to run Windows & notepad just does horrible things to my scripts. Anyone tried cooledit? http://cooledit.sourceforge.net On Fri, 2001-09-28 at 10:51, Paul Abrahams wrote:

Oh it is not a battle ! Linux users are spoilt for choice and people should try out the various choices until they find one they feel at home with. I use vi because I have done for so many years I have lost count...but also I work on Unix systems for a living and vi is omnipresent. I am so ancient that for quick one line edits I still use "ed" .. but I will never forgive the person who decided to put error messages in it .. lol. What's wrong with "?" as a diagnostic for anything you do wrong ..?? tee hee -- Regards Cliff On Fri, Sep 28, 2001 at 01:15:55PM -0500, Gold Bar wrote:

yep that's the evil codred virus you'll find variants of it as well i believe it's codered that's requesting "default.ida" and nimda that's looking for "root.exe" i wrote a cron-perlscript to toast it all: #!/usr/bin/perl -w my @coderedeffect = ("/path/to/log/file/access.log", "/path/to/error/log/error.log"); for (my $x = 0; $x <= 1; $x++) { open (CODERED, "$coderedeffect[$x]") or die "can't open $coderedeffect[$x] - $!"; my @coderedfile = <CODERED>; $coderedloop = scalar(@coderedfile) - 1; for (my $y = 0; $y <= $coderedloop; $y++) { if ($coderedfile[$y] =~ m/default\.ida/g || $coderedfile[$y] =~ m/\.exe/g) { $coderedfile[$y] = ""; } } close (CODERED) or die "can't close $coderedeffect[$x] - $!"; open (CODERED, ">$coderedeffect[$x]") or die "can't open for writing $coderedeffect[$x] - $!"; for (my $y = 0; $y <= $coderedloop; $y++) { print CODERED $coderedfile[$y]; } close (CODERED) or die "can't close $coderedeffect[$x] - $!"; }
