I'm using apt (synaptic) to upgrade some of my upgradeable files (alsa,apt,cups-drivers,audacity,gimp,k3b,openvpn,synaptic). But in every instance apt insists on also upgrading arts,art-devel,kdebas3,kdebase3-devel,kdelib3, and kdelib3-devel. It wants to upgrade the kde packages to 3.3.0-1, I'm using 3.2.3-7; Suse 9.1. Should apt/synaptic be insisting to upgrading the kde and art packages to upgrade the programs I tried to upgrade? For example, why should I have to update the kde packages to 3.3.0-1 for synaptic, a frontend for apt? Is there a problem here? Thanks, Jerome

Remove the component 'kde' from your /etc/apt/sources.list file. Using synaptic for this do: settings -> repository -> select the active uri's (e.g. gwdg.de) -> remove form the sections 'kde' The only components needed for a basic suse (comparable with you) are 'base' and 'update' -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Richard, I don't have the kde component in my repository unless you mean kdegnome2. That is a mistake, kdegnome2 does not exist. It is kde gnome2.

Make this: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/9.1-i386 update security base And notice the difference. After that add the component(s) you need.

"kdegnome" should be "kde gnome" - they are two different directories providing, not surprisingly, kde and gnome packages. I would edit this list heavily, unless you are into cutting-edge stuff and dependency resolution. I would keep base, security and updates. Take out all the suser-* directories, except suser-rbos, which will give you synaptic. Packman will give you mplayer and multimedia stuff. Suse-people, suse-projects and mantel-kernel are development stuff. Usr-local-bin is ulb-gnome, but this will often conflict with mozilla and gnome. So, a suggestion would be: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/9.1-i386 base update security suser-rbos funktronics packman packman-i686 You don't need the second list - duplication. Thank you Richard and David, I followed your suggestions and my sources.list now looks like this: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/9.1-i386 base update security suser-rbos funktronics packman packman-i686 My list of updateable software is a lot shorter now! Find the reason why apt suggest this. Do this by upgrading 1 package at a time (with the install action). In this case I prefer the command line, goto root:

I didn't want to try apt dist-upgrade just yet but I did try apt install digikam: # apt install digikam Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done digikam is already the newest version. Thank you, this looks like it works. I found the rpm for kdebase3-3.2.3-7 but it wouldn't install. So I held my breath and updated to 3.3 and it seems to be working fine.
