Today at work, I became very frustrated with SMART on my laptop. It worked great yesterday at home, then today it was giving me a whole host of errors. I was trying to install tuxracer (or rather penguin racer) and lineak. In both cases, I kept getting parameter errors. Before writing the list (and possibly being godwinated) I wanted to see if I had the same problems at home. Sure enough, I installed those packages without a hitch. Is there - that people know of - an issue with some of the smart repositories behind firewalls. It seemed to work fine for the "offiical" SUSE repo, but none of the others. I was authenticated and could get out to web pages, but just not the smart repos. TIA -- Kai Ponte www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request

This might be the same problem I am having. I never thought of the firewall since I could manually download the files without a problem. I will try it at home tonight and confirm if this might be the case. I only seem to be having problems with packman though. Regards Marius

Hmm..I wonder. I had been following your thread with interest, and was curious as to the source of your issues. Do try this and let us know. I just got to work and gave SMART a shot (after opeining up my bluecoat credentials). Sure enough, it failed with a really long ugly message. :) Now I need to figure out why Pan isn't reading my config files I backed up. :P -- kai www.perfectreign.com

Well, I just confirmed, though I'll be damned if I understand it. It works perfectly from home. I never suspected a firewall because : 1) It used to work just fine (ok this is weak) 2) I can manually download the file via http (which I assume is what SMART is using. 3) Other repositories are fine, only Packman doesn't work. Your symptoms seem to be different though, but I think it is fair to assume that SMART has some problems with firewalls. Don't know what to do about it though, as I know little (read nothing) of firewalls. Marius

Smart also uses mirrors, and some of these may use other protocols, in particular ftp. If your firewall blocks this (normal for corp) it might throw a fit. -- Steve Boddy

I know very little more, except how to penetrate them. This information is mostly used in protecting my own system. (http://scan.sygate.com is a fantastic site for testing your vunerability.) It is also wise to hit your firewall IP from outside using NMap to see what you can get.

That may be the case. In my instance, I know port 80 and 21 are both open and available. I tried the links being attempted in my SMARt update through Firefox and they all worked. For soem reason, it was SMARt which forced me out. Go figure. -- Kai Ponte www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request

Something else to beware of when using FTP. Port 21 may be open so you can request a file. However by default the FTP server will try and open a second data connection back to your machine for transferring the actual file. FTP does have a PASV mode that will transfer the file over your port 21 connection (in-band vs. out-of-band) but I don't know if Smart uses PASV. I'd imagine Firefox does use PASV, hence it works. Some firewalls however can monitor the port 21 commands and open the appropriate port for the incoming data connection. As I said, this depends very much on the firewall's config. Your best bet would be to go through the channels and mirrors, and remove FTP ones, then try again. -- Steve Boddy

I just had a real quick look at the source, and it doesn't look like smart uses the set_pasv call of the python libs. -- Steve Boddy

All the failures I have had was on HTTP. And the FTP mirrors seem to be working just fine, so in my case at least, this cannot be the problem. Marius

My next step Marius, would be to break out Ethereal, and see if the HTTP requests going out are getting a proper response. Compare it with the successful manual download, and see if there's something jumping out that is just plain wrong either outbound or inbound. -- Steve Boddy
