[opensuse] chrome crashes kwin_x11 in plasma5 42.1
This has happened several times, but it does not always happen. If I use chrome (my preferred browser) to look at something in the course of my work, at some point suddenly kwin_x11 will crash and all my screen navigation in plasma5 will cease. The title bars disappear from all my open applications, and I am not able to switch desktops or navigate to a new application. This is what I do when it crashes like this. I hit ctrl-esc to open the resources monitor. Using that, I stop chrome (which has like 5 or 6 processes associated it, but one click kills it all in the resources monitor). On the resources monitor, the process for kwin_x11 says "stopped". I cannot kill it for some reason with the resources monitor. So then I hit alt-f2 and type in konsole. I do a
ps ax | grep kwin
and find the pid for kwin_xll. I have to kill it with
kill -9 <pid>
as kill all by itself won't do it. Then I hit alt-f2 again and type in kwin_x11 to restart it, and it restarts, and my desktop is back up and running, and I didn't have to exit out of all my applications. So it works, but it is a pain in the neck, and basically chrome is unusable. Anyone have any ideas? I haven't filed a bug report yet, because I think there may be something wrong with my system to troubleshoot first. -- George Box #1: 42.1 | KDE Plasma 5 | AMD Phenom IIX4 | 64 | 32GB Box #2: 13.1 | KDE 4.12 | AMD Athlon X3 | 64 | 4GB Laptop #1: 13.1 | KDE 4.12 | Core i7-2620M | 64 | 8GB Laptop #2: 42.1 | KDE Plasma 5 | Core i7-4710HQ | 64 | 16GB -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks for the hints on recovery without a restart. I've had kwin stop on another linux distro,(Manjaro) and hadn't discovered the secret voodo to get out without having to restart. FRT: I have ZERO problems withe Chrome or Chromium running on Plasma5. Firefox has had some memory leaks, so I don't leave it on the screen too long, but both Chrome and Chromium have been solid. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Try changing your windows decoration to Breeze or Plastik There are apparently some 'quirks' with QTQuick and some decoration Mal -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I am hoping there might be some other solution? I hate to admit my preferences, but Breeze and Plastik are like my 2 least favorite windows decorations. I'll grit and bear it if I have to, but how would I verify it has worked, other than using chrome and seeing that it never locks up anymore? -- George Box #1: 42.1 | KDE Plasma 5 | AMD Phenom IIX4 | 64 | 32GB Box #2: 13.1 | KDE 4.12 | AMD Athlon X3 | 64 | 4GB Laptop #1: 13.1 | KDE 4.12 | Core i7-2620M | 64 | 8GB Laptop #2: 42.1 | KDE Plasma 5 | Core i7-4710HQ | 64 | 16GB -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well that was the problem you were hoping to avoid isn't it? What more do you need? Unicorns? ;-) -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Lol, yes unicorns would be nice! Well, I have switched to plastik now, have been using it for about 2 hours, and so far, no crashes. And I guess, it really isn't a bad window decoration after all. ;) -- George Box #1: 42.1 | KDE Plasma 5 | AMD Phenom IIX4 | 64 | 32GB Box #2: 13.1 | KDE 4.12 | AMD Athlon X3 | 64 | 4GB Laptop #1: 13.1 | KDE 4.12 | Core i7-2620M | 64 | 8GB Laptop #2: 42.1 | KDE Plasma 5 | Core i7-4710HQ | 64 | 16GB -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Everything about any of those is tune-able. You can start with plastic, change one thing and s save it under a different name, then come back and tweak some more, click apply. see how you like it, etc. I tried downloading some totally new themes, but I've always found they seem to forget something and then I have to hunt around for where to fix that thing. And if I never see another Dark Theme it will be too soon. (This is about where David Rankin jumps up, turns off the lights, and clubs me with a black cat). What I don't totally understand is just what "Look and Feel" actually does. There are some pretty obvious things that happen when you touch one of those. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well it turns out that wasn't the problem. I had been running with Plastik window decoration all day, and opening and closing chrome when I needed it. Then all of a sudden, kwin_x11 crashed again. I have only had this crash happen when I was running chrome, so that is the only reason I think it is a chrome related issue. However, this time I didn't shut down chrome or the plasmashell. All I did was kill kwin_x11 and restart it, and everything came back. One thing also that happens, when I do a ps ax | grep kwin, there is a pid for kwin_x11 (which needs to be killed) and also a pid for drkonqi in order to initiate a crash report. The problem with that part is, the drkonqi window never shows up, so there is no way to use that to make a crash report. So, what to do? Should I upload my xorg log to pastebin and let someone look at it? Submit a bug report on bugzilla? -- George Box #1: 42.1 | KDE Plasma 5 | AMD Phenom IIX4 | 64 | 32GB Box #2: 13.1 | KDE 4.12 | AMD Athlon X3 | 64 | 4GB Laptop #1: 13.1 | KDE 4.12 | Core i7-2620M | 64 | 8GB Laptop #2: 42.1 | KDE Plasma 5 | Core i7-4710HQ | 64 | 16GB -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
