Re: [SLE] Recommendations for reliable ethernet cards?
Have you tried the FA-310TX with the 2.4 kernel? (The SuSE hardware base lists it as 'supported' but the status of the tulip driver under 2.4 is unclear). Thanks for your help, bw PS FYI the FA-310TX are still available (the price is still about what you paid). "Robert S. McMillan" wrote:

I'd appreciate recommendations of cards known to be reliable with SuSE systems (preferably 6.4 (kernel 2.2) and 7.1 (kernel 2.4), since that's what I'm running). I know that there are many cards that are fine, I just need to pick one. Unfortunately none of the places I buy hardware know anything about Linux compatibilty. Reliability is my top priority, although cost is also relevant.
I've had zero problems with NetGear FA-310TX cards.
On my 6.4 system which I use for a gateway and a place to store backups, and my 7.1 system which is my workstation. The 6.4 box shares a modem with my machine and a legacy '95 system and I run backup scripts on it that grab literally gigabytes at a time over NFS from my workstation.
I just loaded the tulip module and they worked. I payed US$18.50, over a year ago. If they're still available, they're probably giving them away now.

Yes. 7.1 Pro running a stock 2.4.0-GB kernel. -- Robert S. McMillan rmcmilla@centurytel.net "The right to privacy... is the most comprehensive of rights and the right most valued by civilized man" - Justice Louis Brandeis, US Supreme Court, 1928

Here's an interesting one: I stuck the Netgear FA311 in SuSE 7.0, and it was detected and worked right away. Even has a module called fa311. Great, I stuck another one in SuSE 7.1 and nothing. I could not get it working! I could not find a fa311 module listed. I switched to a Linksys LNE100TX and it worked right away. What I'd like to know is, what happened to the Netgear FA311 support between SuSE 7.0 and 7.1? *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 7.1 Professional KDE 2.0.1 KMail 1.1.99 Bryan S. Try the natsemi module. I had one of these cards too. The difference maybe in the kernel.... The FA310 took the Tulip driver in case anyone got confused. Try going to Donald Becker's site: www.scyld.com and find the information (and drivers) their. Matt
