[opensuse] Is OpenSuSE 12.1 crypted swap a disk killer?
upgraded to 12.1 with a clean install and decided to use swap encryption since it seemed to have matured enough. I let the box run overnight to do some small jobs and later found it doing mad, massively insane swapping with no jobs running. it took 25mins to shut down, power off. on restart the disk heads started doing seeks spanning the disk and would frequently drop home on missed steps like the old 30Gb maxtor 3.5in pata disks used to do when they got hot. never did either of those before. bad disk, ja? but smart says all is good, i made another clean install on another disk & exact same thimg happens. afteR more checks, notice that disk access for both disks is slow & system complains disks can't dma. smart still says all is good. even after going back to plain old swap, both disks do mad seeks & bang about and won't do dma. Plugged in my 10.3 disk& all is well. have dma and all works as good as it used to. so did encrypted swap break my pata disks, maybe? anyone ever heard of such things happening? is it encrypted swap specifically or something else in 12.1 causing this? thanks in advance... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Did you check the memory numbers, e.g. in 'top'? I guess you must have had access to the box as you know there were no jobs running.

Do you have reason to suspect the disk? Is it SATA/PATA and 5 or more years old? If the disk is suspect, try running a long smart selftest and see what that says.

Sounds more like a motherboard/hardware problem. Check the dmesg outout for suspicious/unusual messages. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (12.6°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
