[SLE] Ver 6.2 / Star Office Slow
I am new to Linux and have purchased the SuSE 6.2 kit. I have installed (Clean setup) on 486 / 16MB / 1.2GB HDD / Trident 512KB video. Set up X windows. Configuration menu's in Xwin are too big and cannot see the bottom buttons. System very slow. Installed Star Office and impossible to use as software is so slow. Set up on my home computer. P233 / 96MB/ 4.3GB HDD / S3 - S375 video. Install was much quicker but runs slow. Installed Star Office and is still impossible to use as software is so slow. I have set up HP printer OK. I have set up Modem OK and connect to the net via wvdial then netscape. Netscape still slow but usable. We are keen to learn and use Linux in our High School (I am the IT Technician), but at this speed it is no go. Any help please. A wise decision :) Welcome aboard.

I surely believe that! This machine makes a nice print server or router, but do note expect a wonder! 16 MB on a 486 are way to few resources for X, let alone StarOffice!

Hmm, this machine should run fine! At least is has enough memory. Did you do a full install? Try to disable some of the services. Also have a look at xosview. Is the box swapping already? To small a box. Not enough resources to run X let alone Star Office in X. This box would be a nice printer server, firewall, router...... That other OS would choke on this as well. If you insist on using X then try using Windowmaker.... Smaller memory print and the menus scroll when off the screen. Wont help with StarOffice though..... just not enough resources....

You could improve you hardisk access by turning on dma to you controller. It is a new enough machine so you should have at least DMA if not UDMA. The command is 'hdparm -d1 /dev/hda'. Replace /dev/hda with what ever your harddisk device is. You can put that line in your /etc/rc.d/boot or boot.local file to have it happen every time you boot up. If that is not enough maybe try a different windowmanager or disable some of the backround service running. I run a P200MMX with 64M at work and it is fine for me..... Well happy hunting and good luck!
