Hello, I'm running SuSE 7.1. I have a CD burner *and* a CD player in the same machine. After I install SuSE from the CD, I can mount and recognize the CD burner, but I can't seem to mount the player. The CD recorder mounts as: /dev/cdrecorder doing a mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom instead, provides the same result....it sees the burner not the other one. Ideas? Cheers Rich

cat /etc/fstab Does it point to the same device? And ls -l /dev/cdr* does it point to the same device? SuSE may have assumed that users only have a CD-R(W), but not both CD and CDR. Hi Alvaro! My devices look like this.... cat /etc/fstab /dev/hda3 / ext2 defaults 1 1 /dev/hda1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2 /dev/cdrecorder /cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0 /dev/fd0 /floppy auto noauto,user 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0 2 ls -l /dev/cdr* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 May 19 01:35 /dev/cdrecorder -> /dev/hdc lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 May 19 01:35 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdc They are running on the same controller as master and slave.....maybe I should just take one out. <grin> Cheers Rich

This is clearly the problem, the slave should be hdd, maybe ln -sf /dev/hdd /dev/cdrom will solve your problem... Alvaro ps. Don't you need scsi emulation to burn cd? If that's so, follow SuSE documentation to implement it and then you should have something like: anovo@friedman anovo > ls -l /dev/cdr* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Mar 13 10:09 /dev/cdrecorder -> /dev/scd0
Hi Alvaro, Forgot to get back to you..... changed to /dev/hdd /cdrom And it worked fine!! Now I'll see about the burner.....that is, if it will really burn without a SCSI emulator. Thanks for that! Rich

I know the feeling. I have a twin PIII machine with SuSE 7.1 and had a similar problem - it has an ide cdrom on hdc, with scsi dvd and cdrw. The hdd is on hdd (er if you know what I mean). The install went ok and I have 3 devices on the desktop CD,DVD, CDR but only CD worked - and it mopunted what was placed in the CDR! I decided to leave it in the short term and to upgrade the kernel first and after I compiled and installed 2.4.4 all three devices worked properly (even did what they should). In case anyone is interested I upgraded to 2.4.4 because SMP works better than 2.2 and 2.4.2 caused the machine to hang every time I shutdown or rebooted - which is why I reinstalled to put ReiserFS on / to stop waiting for fsck every time :-( I have no idea why it didn't work or how it got fixed, ho hum. regards, Bill
Using Suse 7.1 2.4 kernel: I also have a similar problem, I have a cd player and a cd-rw on the same machine the cd-rw is hooked up as slave to the cd player but only the player works with Suse. From the looks of it I am under the impression that Suse did not count on people having two cd-r(w)'s on the same machine. I am curious to see the solution to this one. I have a dvd and cdrw (both are ide drives) on the same machine. I use SuSE 7.1 2.4 kernel. No problems. Just followed the instructions in the configuration manual (with one exception, the manual links both dvd and the cdrw to the same device). I followed the instructions but created my links as follows: ln -sf /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrecorder ln -sf /dev/scd1 /dev/cdrom. I think the pointers given earlier are correct and as this is a common problem you will probably find much more info. in earlier threads. (check lists.suse.com) Hope that helps Eddie On Monday 21 May 2001 5:59 pm, SpiderSpell wrote:
