[opensuse] VitualBox OSE driver problem
Hello, I'm getting the following error when trying to start virtualbox: The VirtualBox support driver which is running is from a different version of VirtualBox. You can correct this by stopping all running instances of VirtualBox and reinstalling the software.. VBox status code: -11 (VERR_VERSION_MISMATCH). Result Code: 0x80004005 Component: Console Interface: IConsole {1dea5c4b-0753-4193-b909-22330f64ec45} Virtualbox is version 1.5.2-10.1@586 from the update repo and virtualbox-kmp-default is 1.5.0_2.6.22.5_31-11@586 from oss repo. I apply all updates supplied by updater applet. uname tells me the kernel in use is 2.6.22.13-0.3-default. I have tried removing the .virtualbox folder from home, reinstalling and rebooting. Still the same error. Virtualbox was working well before, haven't used it for a week or so. Don't know if it is related, but I have always had to do: modprobe vboxdrv after a restart to load the driver as this never happens automatically. Is anyone experiencing anything similar, recently? Sure. I did when I found your article and tried my VirtualBox. The VirtualBox update was installed, I guess from update repository, but kernel module wasn't updated (packaging bug?). The solution is to add/enable repository: zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Virtualization:/VirtualBox/openSUS... vbox than list updates with: zypper lu -t package and if you want all updates (I did) than: zypper up -t package If you want only VirtualBox kmp module than: zypper in virtualbox-kmp-default Above is for default kernel. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thank you for investigating this. I decided to file my first bug report and found this from yesterday: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=348258
The solution is to add/enable repository: zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Virtualization:/VirtualBox/openSUS... vbox than list updates with: zypper lu -t package and if you want all updates (I did) than: zypper up -t package
If you want only VirtualBox kmp module than: zypper in virtualbox-kmp-default
Above is for default kernel.
and thanks for a solution! The other problem mentioned (kernel module not loaded automatically) is also reported: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=328887 there was talk of a fix a month ago, but nothing happened yet. Actually the kernel module packages should have been released too via the official update channels, but you can just use this repository too. Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I just installed vmware (dl from vmware yesterday) and had no problem at all (of course after module compilation) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

vmware is no doubt a fine piece of software, but I like virtualbox and try to stick with oss wherever possible. I find the free vmware server to be a bit clumsy and overkill for singe vm use and the vmware player requires some fiddly hacking to modify. Virtualbox has a great, simple GUI, does everything I want and the seamless mode simply rocks. :) Using the kmp-default from: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Virtualization:/VirtualBox/openSUS... (as suggested by Rajko) seems to work fine for now, although hopefully it will be added to the update repo, as on this install (I have another one for trying KDE4, backports and such) I'm trying to keep everything as standard as possible. But thanks for suggesting an alternative anyway. :) Cheers, David -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

in fact, the content of the post made me think at vmware, but I use also virtualbox without problem. jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

As Marcus stated it was packaging bug, not to provide kernel module via update repository. IMHO, this should not happen, as update repository is trusted and no update should pull any dependency from external sources. If I would have enabled VirtualBox repository and use zypper than I would not see the problem without inspecting every file, which is not good. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The workaround seems to be working without problems. But I have added a comment to the bug: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=348258 as this could cause problems for anyone updating who isn't using the Virtualization:/VirtualBox repo, and can't be very good for the reputation of the update process. Have you tried /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup? Valerio -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
