here is a short descriptios of my problem. I have SuSE 8.1 and have one DVD drive and one cdrw drive. I had no problems burning (I used KOnCD) until I removed my DVD drive for a week to use it in another computer. Now I have it back... everything seems fine except: when I try to burn a data cd (I can still burn audio) my sytem goes down hard.
any ideas where to look. I havn't changed any configs so whatever changes happend, they must be from SuSE automagically reconfiguring after a hardware change. [/original message]

ok I get: hwscan --list 8kLt.s7X5t8wb7w1: (cfg=yes, avail=no, need=no) cdrom HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-2500 ENrk.i+OHop_Xp96: (cfg=yes, avail=no, need=no) cdrom CD-W540E
These must have been the original config, as they were configured (cfg=yes), but no longer available. Since they are available, but seen as different, delete these two files from /var/lib/hardware
and zyP1.1P+HC1U3306: (cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no) cdrom TEAC HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-2500 Q8g5.6YgWLsFXs+C: (cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no) cdrom HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-25 00
does this help? (as in: what does this mean?)
Maybe. After deleting the 2 above files, rerun hwscan -- cdrom., then --list. If they still show up as cfg=no, try hwscan --cfg=new Q8g5.6YgWLsFX+C which is the id number of your dvd, then rerun hwscan --cdrom to see if it will autocfg. After all this, maybe it will work as it did previously. HTH
Ok I tried that. I still get a hard crash whenever I try to burn a cd. hwscan --list | grep cdrom zyP1.1P+HC1U3306: (cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no) cdrom TEAC HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-2500 Q8g5.6YgWLsFXs+C: (cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no) cdrom HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-2500 the TEAC is not a DVD drive but a cdrw. help? thanks Aron -- "For a man to truly understand rejection, he must first be ignored by a cat."
