[opensuse] Which graphic card should I buy?
Dear list, I had a nvidia and a ATI card. Since I don't play 3d games I could live without 3d effects. I want to buy a graphic card which is completely supported by linux (ergo open source). Is there any? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Hardware Compatibility List (http://hardwaredb.suse.de/?LANG=en_UK)

The list doesn't tell me which is the newest and best (out of the fully supported). Is there one with 3d-support? Totally open source (included in the kernel, so I don't have to mind kernel-upgrades)? That's why I ask the list. I feel irritated with nvidia and ait... Pete .
I've been using ATI with linux for decades and have always had fine results. I'd note also that Macs also use ATI video cards and Apple is quite well known for using quality hardware and, among other things, for video their use in video production. And, as most people know by now, the Mac OS X is pretty much all BSD, a close cousin to Linux. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That is true, but IMHO ATI are lacking some features: 1. XvMS support in their linux drivers (good for playing mpeg2 video like HD using the GPU) 2. Better customer support. nVidia at least have forums and actually they pretty often answer to user questions :) And one BIG minus for ATI - their GUI installer. It happened to me to try to install on 15" CRT monitor, and for some reason I was not able to get more than 800x600 resolution. And ATI's GUI well gets out of the screen, and you can not shrink it or anything. No access to the buttons at all. Well their new drivers for the Mobility Radeon cards are a little bit broken still. ANY attempt to play ANY video, via any number of video players using any number of video sources results in an instant x server crash. I'm just waiting for that to get fixed, but the 8.32.5 drivers simply are not complete for Linux x86_64. This from the company you suggest specializes in video? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

There are OSS drivers both for nVidia and ATI, but they do not support 3D and dual head capabilities. There is OOS project, which makes use of ATI's TV out as well. And according to this article, 3D for nVidia is on its way: http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/01/09/2026252&from=rss -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Even the most advanced equipment in the hands of the ignorant is just a pile of scrap. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Just for a quick test, I went and checked the online shop of one of the bigger german hardware resellers, and they have nvidia, ati, and matrox. nothing else. At another online shop its the same: matrox, nvidia, ati. So, if you dont want either of the big two 3d cards, get a matrox. YMMV. bye, MH -- Die unaufgeforderte Zusendung einer Werbemail an Privatleute verstößt gegen §1 UWG und §823 I BGB (Beschluß des LG Berlin vom 2.8.1998 Az: 16 O 201/98).
