OS is Suse 7.0 I have been trying to configure my Acer CRW1208A so that I can use it's writing/burning capabilities. Since I have not been successful, I figured maybe I should check out my kernel configuration for scsi support, or scsi emulation support. I can't reconfigure my kernel anymore. Check out the results when i do all the different make commands: almost:~ # cd /usr/src/linux almost:/usr/src/linux # make config make: *** No rule to make target `config'. Stop. almost:/usr/src/linux # make menuconfig make: *** No rule to make target `menuconfig'. Stop. almost:/usr/src/linux # make xconfig make: *** No rule to make target `xconfig'. Stop. almost:/usr/src/linux # What's happening here? What do I have to do to be able to configure the kernel? Thanks for your time. Mike

As you may have guessed, you don't appear to have the actual kernel source installed. You just have kernel headers. Install the appropriate lx_suse RPM. I seriously doubt that your lack of kernel source has to do with your changes to lilo.conf or modules.conf. -tara

You simply don't have the complete kernel sources installed but only the kernel headers. Deinstall the package lx_include and install the appropriate kernel source package from series `d´. After having installed the sources, go to /usr/src/linux and do 'make oldconfig' to configure the sources according to the currently running kernel. Afterwards you're free to do further changes via xconfig, menuconfig or config. Changing lilo.conf and/or modules.conf has *nothing* to do with the kernel sources and thus won't change anything. -- Penguins to save the dinosaurs -- Handelsblatt on Linux for S/390

Which kernel are you configuring? Kernel 2.4.x, per included README from Linus, goes anywhere but /usr/src -- preferably in home directory. I think you are referring to this passage:
Do NOT use the /usr/src/linux area! This area has a (usually
incomplete) set of kernel headers that are used by the library header
files. They should match the library, and not get messed up by
whatever the kernel-du-jour happens to be.

This does not mean that /usr/src is off-limits to 2.4.x kernels. It just
means that the /usr/src/linux directory should be reserved for the sources or
header files of the running kernel. If you are compiling a new kernel, use
/usr/src/linux-2..4.4.SuSE (f.ex.)

Configurations of other packages later on will not always look for /usr/src/linux-2.4.4.SuSE, so I put the source in ~/src/linux-2.4.4.SuSE and create a symlink linux--./home/ed/src/linux-2.4.4.SuSE. 2.4.x aware packages seem to correctly look at the symlink in /lib/mosules/2.4.4/build-->/home/ed/src/linux-2.4.4.SuSE. I add the one in /usr/src for insurance because I had difficulties with some packages.
