These questions may sound trivial, but , is the system swapping alot? If so, is the swap partition close to the /usr partition ? ie, try to prevent the heads from seeking too much. I don't think fragmentation is an issue at this point for you. Run top or something to see what processes are taking cpu resources. Running the cd player with X windows off , does that help? Have you tried a different CDplayer? workman/workbone xcd or something like that? -- Lou A.
