Re: [opensuse] 10.3 Screen Resolution problem
Thanks again for reply Gabriel,
I did,
1. Commented out the line with "DISPLAYMANAGER_RANDR_MODE_auto" by
putting a # in front of it. Saved and closed the file.
2. Ctl+Alt+F1 the GUI vanished and console appeared with login.
3. Logged in as root.
4. Executed 'init 3'
5. Executed 'init 5'
6. GUI re-appeared with same resolution
Did I missed something in these steps? If not, what can be other possibilities?
Please help.

Hello Bikram,
So, like I said, I really don't know if this will work for you, but you should give it a try.
Just comment the file (put a # before de line) on the following line:
DISPLAYMANAGER_RANDR_MODE_auto="1024x768_60 64.11 1024 1080 1184 1344 768 769 772 795 -HSync +Vsync"
And restart X by pressing alt+ctrl F1 to go to terminal, log in as root, type init 3, and them init 5.
See if it works and let me know.

Gabriel

: Thanks for your reply Gabriel,
The /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager I have is: (I left out the commented lines)
DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER="Xorg" DISPLAYMANAGER_XGL_OPTS="-accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbuffer" DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm" DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_STARTS_XSERVER="yes" DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER_TCP_PORT_6000_OPEN="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN="bikram" DISPLAYMANAGER_PASSWORD_LESS_LOGIN="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_AD_INTEGRATION="no" DISPLAYMANAGER_SHUTDOWN="auto" DISPLAYMANAGER_RANDR_MODE_VGA="auto" DISPLAYMANAGER_RANDR_MODE_auto="1024x768_60 64.11 1024 1080 1184 1344 768 769 772 795 -HSync +Vsync"
Can you please tell me which line(s) I am required to change and with what?
Please forgive my ignorance, I am pretty new with linux. And please help
Thanks in advance.

All I did was to change this script:
/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager
and commented the last line regarding to randr mode_auto which was forcing my screen resolution to 800x600.
Hope this helps out.

: Thanks for the reply Todd,
Oh yes, I did that several times... (old windows habbit). I restarted the machine also!
Each time I change the resolution and try to save it a window comes with "Test" button. This takes me to a screen that looks like adjusting screen size and position etc, I guess this also restarts the x-server.
What else I might be missing?

Starting with the simplest solutions first. Many people don't realize that you have to restart the xserver in order to have the new resolution.
Have you done this? You can restart the xserver by pressing ctrl+alt+backspace.

After setting the resolution in sax2, when you get the screen with 'test' and 'save', don't test, just save. Then logout and log back in and see if it has worked. The current ATI driver is notorious for having problems with sax2 locking on test. Simply saving without a test has worked for me in the past. It just might work for you. Also, remember if you have a strange resolution, you can easily create a modeline for the xorg.conf with the gtf command: david@providence:/usr/src> gtf 1680 1050 60 # 1680x1050 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 65.22 kHz; pclk: 147.14 MHz Modeline "1680x1050_60.00" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -HSync +Vsync Hope that helps -- David C. Hi David,
I tried both but none worked. I am not sure but my xorg.conf looks a
bit odd to me... the section "Monitor" has UseModes "Modes[0]" but the
matching "Modes" section do not has any modes listed.
Also I have found out that the boot loader setting has Vga Mode 0x315;
mine is a SAMTRON 56V monitor; I am no sure but are higher modes are
at 0x317 or 0x31B (none seem to work though)?
I am inserting my xorg.conf below:

Hi David,
I tried both but none worked. I am not sure but my xorg.conf looks a bit odd to me... the section "Monitor" has UseModes "Modes[0]" but the matching "Modes" section do not has any modes listed.
Also I have found out that the boot loader setting has Vga Mode 0x315; mine is a SAMTRON 56V monitor; I am no sure but are higher modes are at 0x317 or 0x31B (none seem to work though)?

Thanks again for reply Gabriel,
I did, 1. Commented out the line with "DISPLAYMANAGER_RANDR_MODE_auto" by putting a # in front of it. Saved and closed the file. 2. Ctl+Alt+F1 the GUI vanished and console appeared with login. 3. Logged in as root. 4. Executed 'init 3' 5. Executed 'init 5' 6. GUI re-appeared with same resolution
Did I missed something in these steps? If not, what can be other possibilities?
Please help. -- Bikram
Also, remember if you have a strange resolution, you can easily create a modeline for the xorg.conf with the gtf command:
david@providence:/usr/src> gtf 1680 1050 60
# 1680x1050 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 65.22 kHz; pclk: 147.14 MHz Modeline "1680x1050_60.00" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -HSync +Vsync
Hope that helps

You have an intel card, the driver loads fine, but what resolution are you trying to run? Look at the xorg.0.log output above at the resolutions available. If your resolution isn't there, then you will have to _patch_ one of the modes to the resolution you want using the 815resolution program. 1152x864 isn't listed as a _supported_ mode. -- David C. I didn't keep all of your original posts. Can you tell us again how you are trying start the x-window system (using kdm, gdm, etc.) and what exactly is happening when you try to do that. Also, try booting your machine and adding the boot option of "runlevel 3" on the boot option line to boot to the console. My only thought for you is to remove and reinstall the intel graphics driver and go from there. It's worth a shot. You can drop to runlevel 3 with either init 3 or telinit 3 and then run the command line version of yast "yast2" and search on "intel" to find the video driver. Uninstall it and reinstall it and go from there. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. Older Intel Graphics Chips Older Intel graphics chips are supported by two drivers ( "i810" and "intel" ). The intel driver is the default on openSUSE 10.3 due to the high demand for features like native mode setting (no longer VESA BIOS based) and RANDR 1.2 support. When updating to openSUSE 10.3, the i810 driver is not exchanged with the intel driver. Use "sax2 -r" to switch to the intel driver. The intel driver is still not as stable as i810; use "sax2 -r -m 0=i810" to switch back to i810, if you encounter problems that did not occur previously with the i810 driver. In those cases, consider to open a bug report against the intel driver. Switching back to the old driver sounds like it may help you a bunch Bikram. Thanks for your mail Todd and trying to help me out.
I have tried sax2 -r the displayes goes blank with some console
messages and comes back finally to "SaX2 : X11 Configuration" after
that no matter what resolution I choose it is always fixed to 800x600
54 Hz.
If I did something wrong, please let me know.

Thanks for your mail Todd and trying to help me out.
I have tried sax2 -r the displayes goes blank with some console messages and comes back finally to "SaX2 : X11 Configuration" after that no matter what resolution I choose it is always fixed to 800x600 54 Hz.
To switch to intel driver you would actually have to run: sax2 -r -m 0=intel As root Ben -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Indeed although I think Bikram is already using the 'intel' driver so he according to the document I posted last time he should try the 'i810' driver that he used in 10.2 that is still present in 10.3 but not loaded by default. Try sax2 -r -m 0=i810 Cheers Todd Systems Administrator --------------------------------------------- Soho VFX - Visual Effects Studio 99 Atlantic Avenue, Suite 303 Toronto, Ontario, M6K 3J8 (416) 516-7863 http://www.sohovfx.com --------------------------------------------- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Thanks a lot everybody... All of you did a great help. Specially Mr. Todd.
"sax2 -r -m 0=i810" did the trick...
Finally I can see a few more OK buttons :)

Thanks Rankin,
But I was unable to determine where in Yast2 I am supposed to find
"intel". I looked in "Software->Software Management" (this has a
search option) with no luck. Then I looked in all other options but
nothing relates to intel. After that I looked in "Harware->Graphics
Card and Moniter" it popped up SaX2: X11 configuration GUI. Under tab
"Display 1" I have Intel 945G as card. SMATRON 56E57E56V as monitor,
1152x864(XGA) as resolution and 16.7 Mio [24 bit] as colors.
Boot loader settings sets VGA mode as 0x315.
Apart from these I did not find any graphics or monitor related
information in yast2.
I appreciate your help a lot. Please let me know if I have missed something.
Best regards,
Bikram

My only thought for you is to remove and reinstall the intel graphics driver and go from there. It's worth a shot. You can drop to runlevel 3 with either init 3 or telinit 3 and then run the command line version of yast "yast2" and search on "intel" to find the video driver. Uninstall it and reinstall it and go from there.
