Hi all, I have asked this before ..and am asking again .....I have the source of apache installed to /usr/local/src/apache_1.3.12 and apache to /usr/local/apache . I need to recompile apache with DSO support, PHP4, SSL, a newer version of MySQL and maybe Java. RPM upgrade is not an option. How best should I go about this so that I have the option to revert to my original setup in case I screw up ? FYI I backup my entire hard drive to a Tape Drive using taper. This is my Test Server for my portal site which is hosted elsewhere . We use Linux in our company because I insisted on it ..and If I manage to mess things up ..........I'll be in big trouble . The best route to go is: (1) Backup the apache startup file in /etc/rc.d and the directory /etc/httpd. (2) Choose of different prefix during the configure stage. For example if you want to put it in /opt, use: ./configure --prefix=/opt --YOUR_OTHER_OPTIONS (3) Use a program like installwatch during the install stage to turn it into an RPM for easy uninstall. Another option is to compile it from source RPM by changing the prefix and other configuration options in the spec file.
