I was wondering how to get the Yast software update working again, i've installed my computer again and can't seem to get updates anymore, it's just keep saying that there are no updates available, when I configure the update it keeps connecting to suse and asking to login and enter the activation code for SUSE 10.1 Professional. It keeps accepting it but I don't get anywhere after that because it again and again keeps contacting the website.

Is there a way around this, can I configure it in a configuration file perhapse?

I presented the exact same scenario several days ago, in post "biting the bullet". I have had no reply. I, too, am trapped in an endless loop of registering on the novell site, then going nowhere. During the original install, there was no way to connect the modem at that time, so I chose "register later". Judging from the return email from SuSE, I DID register later...but have not discovered the update links.

There is such a huge plethora of discussion re "updater" that it is difficult to glean the correct procedure. (And I've been with SuSE every release since 6! ;-) )

Unfortunately you have been caught up in one of the biggest cockups perpetrated by the new owners of SuSE on the SuSE user in stuffing the way the OS is updated in v10.1. This problem has been the subject of much discussion and qyuestioning that, I am afraid, most of us have - regrettably - come to ignore it because it is something that the SuSE people who participate in this forum are expected to respond to. So, apologise for not responding earlier to your request for help. You do NOT need to register (or as Rolf stated, Activate) SuSE 10.1. This registration is only for the commercial version of the OS but, again, in their wisdom, SuSE stuck this regiistration thing in the installation process which is catching all of us non-commercial users, or newbies as most of us here are. Just ignore the reg. thing. It is not required. HOWEVER, when you are installing 10.1 and you are asked to register (after the initial test to see if you can get an internet connection) proceed with the rego. because this allows the new installation to go away and find a suitable server for any updates and insert this into the YOU updating source 'database'; also, this will download 2 critical updates to the updater pacakge. The 2 pacakges which are upgraded are: libzypp update and yast2-online-update Now, if you have already gone thru the installation process and are in the situation which you now find yourselves, as I understand it what you need to do is to do Control Centre/Software/Online Update and find the two packages I just mentioned and only update these 2 - and only these 2 - packages. Unselect any other packages - they will be eventually updated - but right now all you need to update are the 2 above. You will note that in 10.1 the YOU updater does not act like it did in earlier versions. You will see that packages are ticked even if they had been updated, but what identifies packages which need to be updated have a right-pointing triangle against them, on the left-side of the tick. So, yo will find that the above 2 packages have this triangle against them (and so will other packages) but for the first time to get yourself out the present hassle unselect (or is it 'deselect'? :-) ) all other packages except for the 2 above. After these 2 are updated the update process should get back to normal and the rest of the system will get updated - at least this is the theory. At this point I have to say that the old updater, YOU, is no longer the updater. The new updater is called zmd. The reference above to YOU is only for the purpose of getting the 2 packages downloaded and installed which are supposed to then fix the big hassle in zmd which will then update the rest of the system. (All perfectly clear? Good :-) .) Many people here have been bitten by the abomination which is the new updater in 10.1 and have switched over to smart update system. But all in good time......
