They don't work. Hello SuSE people, After upgrading from kde 3.0-5 to 3.1 I have lost my system sounds. MP3's, cd's, .wav's all work. I have checked in control center and aRTS seems to be set up properly and plays the "test sound" OK. Then went to "system notifications" and double checked that certain events would play a sound. Rechecked the box that says enable sound for all events. I have gone over this at least six times. Still no system sounds. Anybody else have this problem? Any suggestions? Bob S.

I was all set to be the hotshot with the answer but while checking things out I found that I have EXACTLY the opposite problem. My "System Notifications" work just fine (Suse8.1, kde3.1.0), but if I try to use the "System Bell" instead I get no output. I know it's worked in the past. Most Curious. -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!

Well I think I figured out "my" system bell problem. While messing about w/ your question I found out I no longer had a system bell when I checked the box "Use system bell instead of system notification". If this box is unchecked then the "System Notification" sounds were used as they should be. In my case the solution was found in kcontrolcenter->Regional&Accessibility->Accessibility->Bell After I checked "Use system bell" then EITHER "System Bell" or "System Notifications" worked for me. If not checked then originally I could only use "System Notifications" (now for some reason both work) There is some wierd interaction Between the settings under Regional&Accessibility and Sound&Multimedia but darned if I can explain it. But enough about me NOW onto your problem! Check the available settings in kcontrolcenter->Regional&Accessibility->Accessibility->Bell There is another checkbox "Use custom bell". If this is checked but no sound is selected then you get no sound no matter what you select in the sounds&multimedia section! My suggestion is that if selecting one of these doesn't fix your problem right off the bat then try checking each box, apply the change, then uncheck and apply. Then go back and try setting up your system sounds again. I don't know why but it worked for me 8-0 Good Luck, let me know how it turns out. -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!

One other oddity, If I try to select "Play a sound" then try to choose a diferent sound than the default the file requester comes up empty. Even though there are tons of sounds available. This would lead a lesser individual to think that there weren't any appropriate sounds in that directory. It turns out the requester will show only folders not files for some reason. Now I cancel that requester, Press the reset button (next to apply), go to a diferent settings section (like system bell), then come right back to "System Notifications". At this point I once again choose the activity I want a sound played for, check "Play a sound", open the file requester and magically now it will let me navigate to files. I would love to know if someone else can reproduce this curious behavior. Or even if they can't. Thanks for listening. -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!
I've recreated your System Bell issue. SuSE 8.1 Pro, KDE 3.1 from kde.org. As for the "Play a Sound" issue I get strange results but not exactly like yours. At first I get a list of sounds from /opt/kde3/share/sounds/ to choose from. If I then go to another section such as Sounds & Multimedia/System Bell and then go back to Sounds & Multimedia/System Notifications it defaults to my home directory. UNLESS I choose the same sound from the /opt/kde3/share/sounds/ directory, Apply it and that absolute directory is still there when I come back from a different section of kcontrol. THEN it will keep the /opt/kde3/share/sounds/ directory as a default for all the KDE System Notifications. I am always getting a file list but not from the same directory in a consistent manner without manual intervention. Not the behavior I expect in this program. I expect it to know its default directory and keep it except where manually altered per item. Not sure whether this is a bug because the kde.org install of 3.1 (on my otherwise up-to-date via YOU system) did NOT go without some manual tweaking of reinstalling all the RPMs in different orders depending on what worked... I am awaiting the official SuSE 8.1, KDE 3.1 release to check this out again. Stan On Thursday 13 February 2003 01:41 am, David Herman wrote:

As it does kere (but no list of sounds the first time)

Although I don't get a file list in the first requester, it is in the correct directory (/opt/kde3/share/sounds/) , the second time I open the requester (after moving to a diferent section of kcontrol and then back) it is in my home directory as you described, but now showing files as well as directories.

-----------snip------------ My upgrade went pretty smoothly, a fairly fresh system, then yast online updates, then a full apt upgrade (minus mozilla, ximian, kernel upgrades and mantel). Followed this with the kde3.1 upgrade following kde.orgs directions. There were 2 or 3 package conflicts that I used the suggested resolutions for. I'm glad you were able to reproduce this, It's really wierd. There seem to be a couple of weak spots in the kcontrolcenter that weren't there before. I probably won't spend alot of time worrying about this one, I really dont use system sounds to much. I was just surprised when I ran across it. Thanks for your detailed reply. Thanks for replying, again. Glad you got yours working. I cannot. Tried every possible combination as you described. No go. Tell me, when you "click" on the little arrow button, does that play the selected sound? Didn't have the problem you described in your following message about the sounds files/directory. Neither did I have the one that Stan described except that if I changed directories it would remain at that one until I changed back. It stays at the last selected directory which I like. Do me a favor please. In the interest of trying to solve this problem I went to the more options section and tried to utilize the"message" option and the "execute a progam" option. Neither of these will work either so it is probably not just a sound problem. Will you try that and let me know? Something wrong with the Control Center I think.
I don't know why but it worked for me 8-0
Yes, it did for me also, and in 8.1 with kde-3.0.5
Good Luck, let me know how it turns out.

What happens if you create a new user and login into that user? Do hear sounds now? -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Hello Richard, Thanks for replying. Nope, created the new user and there were no system sounds there either. Funny thing, Tried to crteate the user in the Control Center. Did Adminisrative logon, went to create a new user, name boxes came up with the flashing cursor in the first box, and it would not accept input from the keyboard. No typing would appear. Had to open Yast2 to create the user. Something wrong with my Control Center?? A corrupted rpm during download?? Bob S.

Yes it does, (but my problem was mainly w/ thesystem bell not giving audible output.) ----snip----

Yes both of these worked for me as well. (This certainly will be handy if I want to run gimp every time I open a new window 8-) So it seems that your whole notification system is failing you (except maybe system bell). Have you tried setting up another user for testing? It seems like this might be a way to find out if there is a problem with your whole system versus just something specific to your user login (in /home/yourName/.kde) I remember some mails about files in /var that people needed to delete after upgrading to kde3.1, don't know if that could be related As I was getting ready to send this it occured to me that when I run ksystemguard (kmenu ->System->KDE SystemGuard) and view the process table I almost always see a command named knotify. (found in the rpm's kdebase3, kdelibs3, kde2-compat) I tried "man knotify" and suseHelpcenter but found no information. it seems a suspicious coincidence... The files ~/.kde/share/config/knotify.eventsrc ~/.kde/share/config/knotifyrc might hold some clues as well. HTH -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!
