[opensuse] A good partition resize strategy?
Hi list I've got an openSuSE11 installed on a vmwaremachine, with a number of partitions. The root partition (/), however, is too small. I need to xfer the vmware image to another vmware machine, this time making room for - and increasing the size of the root partition. Any good strategy, hints? As always,- thank you! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The only method I know is treating it as I would on a real computer. You can add hard disks to it, boot from live CDs, copy from one HD to another (or to a network share on the host)... Using a live, you can "dd" it. There should be a method to mount the virtual HDs on the host directly, when the VM is not running. Maybe there is. I know how to read from them, but not writing. Same for resizing... maybe there is a method, but I dunno. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. - thank you for your advise. - this is what I did... Using VMware Converter, I "converted" the vmware image to a new, bigger one. Then I booted the new image from a Live-CD with Gparted using which I was perfectly able to modify/resize the partition(s) in question. "VMware Converter"? which tool is that one? - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.9 (GNU/Linux) iEYEARECAAYFAkn98M0ACgkQtTMYHG2NR9VIrgCeLzbe+PFNxj6JqnvHMbaTKXiM /XQAn1hw1Jh36+xWdDNaQLSdxbcQctvD =paQn -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Good evening; - vmware converter is a programme that will convert a) your local running machine b) a remote running machine c) a remote cold machine into a vmware image which is saved into a running ESX server. Link: http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/ So I fired up (from a windows client) a vmware converter, pointed to the source image (the SuSE with the small root partition) and elected to save the image onto (the same) ESX server, but this time giving it more room. This in itself will not resize the partion(s), but will leave room for it to be done later. I then booted the second (target) machine from a live Gparted CD - and fixed the problem. Afterwords the target (the large one) booted fine,-but now has a much bigger root partition.
