You have to include some more information: what kind of mail account (pop, IMAP?), how did you configure it and what program are you using to fetch it???

Pine doesn't fetch your mail, you need to use for example fetchmail do do that. I use Mutt so I don't know how you configure fetchmail + pine. Start with reading man fetchmail.
