Hello list members, this is probably not the right place to ask, but maybe some guru can answer it for me. I just ordered a new ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard, it supports 4 x 240-pin DIMM, support max. 8GB DDR2 800/667/533 ECC and non-ECC,un-buffered memory. Ok, here is my question. I am looking at purchasing memory for it and I see DDR2 667 PC2-5300 and DDR2 PC2-5400, both of the memory kits are dual channel 2 x 1GB sticks, what is the difference between PC2-5300 and PC2-5400, both are running at 667 Mhz? Thanks in advance. -- John Registered Linux User 263680, get counted at http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi John, There are lots of 'gurus' on Google ;-) but I worked in the industry in Silicon Valley for several years.

The modules are essentially the same, but the '5400' variety have been tested and 'certified' at a 675 MHz clock speed vs. 667 MHz. hth & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks Carl. I guess that I will go ahead and get the pc2-5400 since I didn't see a significant price difference between the two. I wanted the pc2-6400 but it is a little pricey for now. Thanks again. -- John Registered Linux User 263680, get counted at http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The only difference between the 5300 & 5400 is maximum speed. If 5300 works OK then that's all you need. What does the mom board manual specify? Also, whenever working with memory, it's always a good idea to run memtest before and after installing, to see if any problems appear. Memtest is available by booting from the install CD or DVD. It can also be installed with Yast. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
