[opensuse] New Skype User Question
I downloaded skype for suse 10+ and installed it on s11. I'm able to login to a skype account created on another computer, but I cannot activate a skype test call. I know that my headset works, but I am having trouble verifying that the mike works. How do I get the test call to work? Have you verified that the mike works at all? Boris. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, but the headset I am using is a brand new Plantronics. This headset comes with a usb adaptor, but it seems not to work at all with Linux. The earphones work when plugged into the earphone jack of external speakers. I have verified by running the Fedora mixer program that the mike and mike boost are muted and I have not figured out how to unmute them. On Suse I am running without Gnome and KDE, so I have not yet figured out how to check and adjust the volume of the mike. I am a complete newbie with a/v on Linux. I have been running mplayer on OpenBSD for about a year, but have not even attempted to use a mike until yesterday. Skype call test works now on both F9 and S11, but nothing I say is played back.

I don't know. On 10.2 I couldn't get a jack mike to work. I solved my problem by getting a Skype-compatible Logitech USB headset to use instead. -- "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty." On 11.0 the mike/headset connected via USB does not work for me. Skype works now that I have plugged the mike into the red jack. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It sounds like you have not selected the correct microphone in Skype. You need to go to the options, audio device. It is the icon you find in the lower left hand corner. -- Joseph Loo jloo@acm.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I discovered that there were two mic inputs yesterday. But the real problem seems to have been the presence of pulse audio. When I ran alsamixer there was only one pulseaudio device shown. I used yum to remove all pulseaudio software. Then alsamixer displayed a whole bunch of devices, including two mics. Then whenever I ran skype, I got a whole bunch of messages saying 'unable to open slave'. That message turned out to be because I had forgotten to exit root mode after running yum. Once I went back to user mode, I was able to successfully execute the skype test message function. :-) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
