After installing kde2.2 the startup process won't finish. It gets stuck on the second icon the the popup panel. The console contains a large list of files that appear to be monitored by fam. There is no error message an the panel eventually goes away. I've installed all of the 'base' pcakages, most of the 'applications' and 'development'. Is there a way to make sure that fam is working ok. How about the modifications made to /etc/inetd.conf, the package added this to the file: sgi_fam/1-2 stream rpc/tcp wait root /usr/sbin/fam fam however there is no sgi_fam entry in /etc/services. Any suggestions? -- Rafael Herrera

I've had this problem when applying some new themes for kde. Newbie as I am I backed up my home dir, deleted evferything in it and re-ran kde. It worked that time. /Ziga Dolhar

I deleted all kde related files in my home dir and /tmp, created a new account, started kde from the console as root. In all three cases it always gets stuck in the same place, "initializing services ..." or something like that, while blinking the second icon of the popup panel with the big kde logo. I installed/reinstalled ALL the packages except qt3-*, qt-japanese and qt-korean. Same result. what the hell is wrong with this thing? Rafael
