ADSL configuration problem: Waiting for PADO - Please check your setup and try again
Hi there, I really need some help on my ADSL connection with SuSE8.0. Problem is: when I try to connect, KInternet log gives: pppd: Sending PADI and then: Waiting for PADO. Please check your setup and try again. On Win2k the ADSl connection is working alright (with the same cables). I use an Alcatel Speedtouch 510 ADSL modem and a Realtek RTL8139 Ethernet Adapter, my pppd version is 2.4.1, kernel version is 2.4.18-4GB. Service provider is Tiscali in Holland. I have to use PPPoE. First I tried to use the YAST2 setup. I can ping the modem. According to Tiscali I should set the Network Adapter to 10MBit/half duplex. If I dmesg |grep eth0: 'eth0: RealTek TRL8139 Fast Ethernet at 0xe4da8000 00:40:f4:2e:2f:0a, IRQ 5 eth0: Identified 8139 chip type 'RTL-8139C' eth0: Setting 100mbps full-duplex based on auto-negotiated partner ability 45e1. eth0: no IPv6 routers present' However, when I use mii-tool the output is: 'eth0: 10 MBit, half duplex, no link' So I assume the bandwidth is automatically set correct, although I do not quite understand why dmesg is giving the above message. What does 'no link' mean, should I have a link? There is one LED burning at the adapter, and I can ping the ADSL modem so I expect the adapter is okay (?) I tried putting 'options rtl8139 options=0x40' (i.e. 10 MBit/half duplex) in /etc/modules.conf but then the network adapter fails in the boot process. I tried configuring the /etc/modules.conf and /etc/ppp/options according to http://www.adsl4linux.de/howtos/ but when I come to testing 'pppd eth0' I get: 'Sending PADI' and nothing happens anymore. I tried disabling the SuSEfirewall2 (and enabling the personal firewall) by renaming the three SuSEfirewall2 files in the init.d directory. I still got: 'Waiting for PADO. Please check your setup and try again.' I tried using the RP-PPPoE program instead of the kernel facility. No result: again a 'timed out' message. If anybody has any suggestions how to solve this problem, I would be eternally grateful!!! Thanks, regards, Han Rauwerda
Typically adsl modem is also a router, especially when
you connect to it via ethernet. Alcatel Speedtouch 510
should be adsl modem/router so you don't need to run
ppp on Linux box, it would be your adsl modem/router
job. It should be enough to setup default gateway on
your Linux box pointing to adsl modem/router or even
better let dhcp to take care of it dynamically.

Hi there,
I really need some help on my ADSL connection with SuSE8.0.
If I dmesg |grep eth0: 'eth0: RealTek TRL8139 Fast Ethernet at 0xe4da8000 00:40:f4:2e:2f:0a, IRQ 5 eth0: Identified 8139 chip type 'RTL-8139C' eth0: Setting 100mbps full-duplex based on auto-negotiated partner ability 45e1. eth0: no IPv6 routers present'
However, when I use mii-tool the output is: 'eth0: 10 MBit, half duplex, no link'
So I assume the bandwidth is automatically set correct, although I do not quite understand why dmesg is giving the above message. What does 'no link' mean, should I have a link? There is one LED burning at the adapter, and I can ping the ADSL modem so I expect the adapter is okay (?)
I tried putting 'options rtl8139 options=0x40' (i.e.
Please check your setup and try again.'
I tried using the RP-PPPoE program instead of the kernel facility. No result: again a 'timed out' message.
If anybody has any suggestions how to solve this problem, I would be eternally grateful!!!
