I am using a lot of golden-cd's in jolliet (Win95-long) format. After upgrading my kernel from 2.0.31 to 2.0.36 i can see the long filenames and everything works just fine. Best regards, Yves -- On Sun, 27 Dec 1998 11:52:32 zentara wrote:

Greetings fellow Linux users!!
I have a couple of questions to ask........
1. Is it possible to store files lets say DOS/WIN/WIN95 files using their conventions (ie, filename, and length) on a ext2 partition?! What I am trying to say is that can anyone upload a windows file to my linux box and then retrieve it at a later date without the file being corrupted?!
As long as you have vfat compiled into your kernel, you shouldn't have any problem. The only glitch might be long filenames if you don't have vfat. Linux dosn't corrupt files, (as some other os's are known to do) :-) I send files back and forth between fat16, fat32, and ext2 partitions without problem. You will need to keep in my the carriage-return-new-line problem in text files. Linux has a couple of utilities called dos2unix and unix2dos. For example, if you download, or create a perl script with windows, then try to transfer it over to linux and run it, you will get alot of errors if you don't run it thru dos2unix first. If you are uploading alot of text files to your linux box, then transferring them to your windows system, it might be better to zip them up first.
2. What would be the best replacement for the standard ftp daemon? I don't necessarily want the most features. I used to use Serv-U FTP under win95, and if I can have something of that nature and of that power and capability, I will be GLADLY happy!!

Most interesting........ According to the login screens I am running Kernel 2.0.35. This is out of the box (or jewelcase). I have never undertaken a kernel recompile before......Actually, it seems kinda scary :-) However, I will get to it hopefully by the end of the week. Oh another quick question. I have seen a lot of 2.1.x kernels. Firstly, are they stable?! Secondly.....are all linux kernels independent of distributions? According to www.kernel.org the latest version is 2.1.132. Can I download that and install it on my SuSE 5.3 box? or does it have to go through some modifications by SuSE first and then be available at their ftp site?! Yves Van Belle wrote:

Go back to www.kernel.org and read carefully. Kernel versions with an odd second number are *developmental* kernels. They have drivers and features that the normal ones don't have, but unless you are developing for it or need one of those drivers, it is suggested that you use a stable kernel. Recompiling the kernel sounds more scary than it is. I've done it so many times that I can do it in my sleep and I've only had it fail on two occasions 1) my L2 cache on the motherboard was bad and 2) I was adjusting the Sound Blaster parameters to get the right IRQ and DMA values. Just follow the steps and soon, you'll be doing it just for fun :-) lunaslide * PGP key->pgpkeys.mit.edu port 11371 * * * * * * Lisp has all the visual appeal of oatmeal with fingernail clippings mixed in.
