Re: [SuSE Linux] KPPP Configuration - What's wrong with this picture?

I configured Kppp (in the KDE wm) and initially I get a connection but then it dies (unexpectedly! - is this a joke? Was he shot? I imagine that if he'd died after long term illness he died 'expectedly'). Why is that? I didn't do anything out of the ordinary nor did I add any options.

i always manage to screw my kppp/ppp every now and then and i've pretty much narrowed down the causes of why the message "kppp or kppp helper died unexpectedly". check the following:
1. make sure you have a /etc/resolv.conf file 2. make sure that you have setuid permission to /usr/sbin/pppd. i've found out that having "x" permission to this is not enough. 3. make sure that you have at least "x" permission to kppp. i've set this
to suid also because i'm very nasty . . . the kppp screen does not come up anyway if you don't have "x"permissions to it.
the permissions to the above items seems to be reset after you run YaST. i
remember reading a post where it said that one of the things that YaST does
on exit is to compare "all" essential permissions to the /etc/permissions file. if there is a change, YaST resets it to match this file. what i have done is to backup the old permissions file to /etc/permissions_old and
then "uncomment" (#) the permissions of the items that you don't want yaST to reset. it's also good to keep a backup of /etc/resolv.conf somewhere since YaST also clears this file out when it exits.
I have the /etc/resolv.conf file. Permission for pppd is set to '-rwsr-xr--'. I know what 'r', 'w' and 'x' stand for but what about 's'? It's not mentioned in the SuSE manual (at least, I didn't find it and believe me I searched for it) And what's 'setuid'? There's no "lock" option for /etc/ppp/options. This is done in YaST, right? -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
