I assume you are using an older release of SuSE Linux? (guessing because missing information). Because meanwhile kernel gets bigger and additional drivers are available, we now need an additional modules disk, so we added support for tapes in all of the install kernels. So if you use a bootdisk from SuSE 6.1 you will be able to use your tape even in the rescue system without problems. Another solution is to use the Live/Demo-CD. This is essentially a fully working linux system, all modules are available and you can even run your backups under X whilst doing other things.
