Re: [SLE] online update

They do which is why there are several mirrors. Don't misquote me or put words out there that I *didn't* say. Please. It's not very becoming and I have a hard time taking anyone serious who says I said something which I did not say. I said that if you want more bandwidth for ftp.suse.com which is the only ftp server that SuSE runs then make donations..right now it's all they can afford and that won't change for the immediate future. Sorry..thems the breaks. They don't have the coffers that RH and Microsoft has.. It preforms pretty well compared to say..ftp.sun.com. Sorry.. ->And please don't say that the price I paid was not enough instead of books in ->packages I always prefer a proper access and a better why to stay updated. You have the proper access...."mirrors" and the main site. $70 for a box doesn't even pay for 1/2 the stuff SuSE gives to the public (Linux Community)...or else they wouldn't need to raise funding as they did a month or so ago..they would just have coffers the size of public companies that do not contribute as much. BTW..if you want to respond to something I've said publicly..do it publicly on the SLE please. -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- "Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal" -AE

You need to calm down Ben, your heated reaction is out of all proportion to the question in hand. And the above comment, which I left unsnipped is a very valid one. Why is it that there are a group of people on this list who scream at even the slightest hint that Suse is not always doing a wonderful job. It is such a childish reaction. That and the pointless (and apparently inexhaustable) supply of pointless Microsoft bashing devalues this list, and quite frankly makes it a royal pain to wade through the drivel. It is much more prevalent here than on any other list I am on. That includes other Linux, Freebsd and various technical lists. -- Regards Cliff

I don't think SuSE is perfect (indeed, SuSE is far from it), but I grow tired of a few things: - Wah! SuSE FTP server is slow! - Wah! Blah worked fine before the &^%$#@ upgrade! - Wah! I can't see blah blah fonts blah blah! Known issues, folks. I get tired of saying so. EVERYBODY knows that the SuSE FTP server is overloaded all of the time, no exceptions; use a mirror. Okay, so upgrading packages breaking things sucks; it's often completely unavoidable, though. Such is life. And like I give a rat's ass what fonts look like to you...I'll try to help, but I bet you've not done your research on this.

Once in a while, yes. I'm not a Microsoft Champion, but I try not to badmouth things I can't control (tip 'o the hat to Ben).

If you look at the front page to Geocrawler, you'll see that SLE is consistently in the top-five of all of the email lists they monitor and archive. Consistently higher: SL(DE), LKML, Debian-User; tough competition. We have a pretty low S/N ratio here, which gets annoying, but there's a lot of good exchanges here, too. You take the good with the bad. ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? - Wah! SuSE FTP server is slow!
People may genuinely wonder if they are doing something wrong
- Wah! Blah worked fine before the &^%$#@ upgrade!
--ditto-- the above point
- Wah! I can't see blah blah fonts blah blah!
I never read these, since I can be of no help. I suppose people do like to be able to comfortably read what is on their screen though.

You assume everyone on this list has been hanging out here for as long as you have. EVERYBODY does not know this. It is even conceivable some people may not even know what a mirror is, or that one geographically nearer by may be faster or less over-crowded (even that is not always true).

This is a very unpleasant attitude.
you've not done your research on this.
Asking on the list is a factor in that research, perhaps it should not be the first resort. And package upgrading causing damage is *not* a good thing. Some people btw believe what SuSE says when they buy the box in the store, and are maybe quite disappointed to find a lot of it is marketing baloney.

Of course there are a lot of good exchanges here, but there are also a lot of people who seem to think it necessary to attack the Beast of Redmond in every posting, and some of it is just nonsense, and is of no value. See I just did it... lol. -- Regards Cliff
