I have a yahoo account as "backup" -- if I REALLY need to send something out, IMMEDIATELY, and hotpop's smtp is being flaky...then I use that. But a list like this isn't worth the trouble of interacting with it on yahoo or gmail or any other webmail service.
For what it's worth, you can get ordinary POP3 service from gmail. Like you, I didn't care for the web interface that some of my friends were fond of. And in the end, gmail for me was completely redundant, so I eventually stopped using it anyway. But I do know for sure that you can connect to a POP3 server there, and as I remember, the service was pretty good.
