help newbie installing software?
Admittedly I'm a newbie to this but it sure seems difficult to install anything that isn't already included on the SuSE disks. Running 8.0 and am trying to install Audacity. It requires wxWindows and I am not at all sure which of the dozens of versions to install. So I downloaded wxWindows 2.4.0 for GTK+ Then I find that GTK+ has dependencies. Now I have downloaded a pkgconfig 0.15.0 package and it seems to have successfully installed. If I then install the GLIB 1.2.8 version included, it works OK, it finds the pkgconfig software just fine. But the next dependency, ATK 1.2.0 wants GLIB 2.0+. So I got GLIB 2.2.1 and tried to install it, but it DOESN'T see pkgconfig. This message appears at the end of the configure command for GLIB 2.2.1 checking for pkg-config... no configure: error: *** pkg-config not found. See http://www.freedesktop.org/software/pkgconfig/ Checking freedesktop site is useless. No help there, no troubleshooting, no tips. I have looked at README and INSTALL files to no avail, as I don't understand what the heck they are talking about in much of them. Does anybody out there have some guidance for a newbie about why GTK+ 2.2.1 won't see the pkgconfig routine which I KNOW is installed? Thanks in Advance!! __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Tax Center - forms, calculators, tips, more http://taxes.yahoo.com/

A) I would be careful installing/mucking around with glibc libs. B) according to http://audacity.sourceforge.net/unix.php?lang=en the dependencies are listed as such: RedHat RPM Latest Stable Version: 1.0.0-2 audacity.i386.rpm (Binary RPM, 750K) Requires: wxGTK-2.2.9-0.i386.rpm (2 MB) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ libogg-1.0rc3-1.i386.rpm (14K) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ libvorbis-1.0rc3-1.i386.rpm (164K) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Did you try to install these first? Please post reply. A) I would be careful installing/mucking around with glibc libs. B) according to http://audacity.sourceforge.net/unix.php?lang=en the dependencies are listed as such:
IIRC there is an Audacity pkg somewhere on the 8.0 Suse disks .. once you have that up and running you should be able to update/upgrade it relatively easily. I *think* it's under Multimedia , at least its there on the 8.1 disks.. and I know I had it running under 8.0 as well.. At east once you install the package from the suse disks you can tell what it is you *DO* need to get/install all at the same time. However, I do believe Curtis is correct in telling you not to mess about w/ the glibc stuff unless you really know what you are doing. There seems to be an enormous number of things that can go wrong w/ that set of libraries .. Any updates should show up in the Online Updates w/ yast2 in 8.0 and later... PS I like Audacity a lot. <G> -- j Afterthought : Ready-cut wiring is always too short.
Thanks alot to all you guys for your advice, especially the warnings from Curtis about what NOT to mess with. Feel kinda stupid for not checking the SuSE discs. But my mindset is that I want to LEARN Linux, not just be a "user". I was taught BASIC learned DOS 3.0 by banging on an old Kaypro 286 and being mentored by a "hacker" while in the Navy. (Thanks Bob Claybaugh, where ever you are) When the idea of a GUI came along it seemed so foreign...(anyone else ever run Windows 386, prior to 3.0 release? <grin> I think I've still got the box and all for that-LOL)...but millions of "blue screens of death" later, I'm a fairly competent WinDuhs user (is that an oxymoron?) and am well on my way to kicking the habit. It just seemed to me that running .rpms was "cheating" and installing from source is what a "real" Linux guy would do. <grin> But boy it is daunting and as Curtis pointed out, there is the real chance of screwing up my install since I know just about enough to make myself dangerous at this point. But Audacity is a VERY nice program, I agree. Installed the RPM's and upgraded with the RPM from the sourceforge website and all seems well. Thanks again folks! -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Also: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/faq.php?lang=en#i4 4. Unix: Why do I get failed dependencies when installing from the RPM? First, ensure that the wxGTK is installed; a link can be found from our Linux page - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/linux.html. If the RPM still fails to install, this is an unresolved issue. Simply install the RPM using the flag - --nodeps. 5. Unix: Why do I get an error while loading the shared library libwx_gtk.so? This could be one of two problems: - - If you installed the wxWindows RPM, be sure to run "ldconfig" (as root) so your system knows about the new library. - - If you installed wxWindows from source, it may have been installed in /usr/local, but /usr/local/lib may not be in your library path. Add /usr/local/lib to the file "/etc/ld.so.conf" and then run "ldconfig". You may also want to add "/usr/local/bin" to your path, so that programs can find the "wx-config" utility.
