Hi; Can anyone recommend a good printer for use with linux. I'm looking to upgrade from my Epson photo 700 (mix of getting old and needing something faster ). I keep hearing good things about the Canon i850 but then Canon's linux support it almost zero. I know Epson is the best supported in Linux (looking at the gimp-print web site) but their printers (according to Tomshardware guide) seems quite slow (looking at the stylus c82 or photo 830). Any help or recommendations, thanks. -- Darren Harmon http://www.darrenharmon1.uklinux.net

Very satisfied with my Photo 925. The HPs are well supported now. I have an HP-970Cxi that will even auto-print on both sides of a page with the HP (mechanical) adapter. -- Patrick Shanahan Please avoid TOFU and trim >quotes< http://wahoo.no-ip.org Registered Linux User #207535 icq#173753138 @ http://counter.li.org Linux, a continuous *learning* experience

Hi, Firstly I would NEVER recommend Canon they do not support open source. The thing to watch on InkJet printers is the running costs. All manufactures make their money on the ink cartridges, not the actual printer. I suggest you have a look at the following site, "Suggested Printers for Free Software Users". http://www.linuxprinting.org/suggested.html -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------
That's great. You should know that the mechanical adapter comes with the printer. It's not an option that you have to pay extra for. At least not when I bought mine. It does nice color printing. I even tried the 2-sided page once and it worked. I don't think I would do it for color pictures, tho. --doug At 08:04 03/22/2003 -0500, Patrick Shanahan wrote:

Sorry if this is a resend. Why not try an HP LaserJet, if you don't need color. Most of them accept PostScript. Maybe some of the color printers from them also accept PostScript. I can't tell offhand if my 970Cxi will. (I've never tried to access it from Linux.) --doug At 07:57 03/22/2003 +0000, Darren Harmon wrote:

I also use this printer. Seems to accept PS, or at least gives me no refusals when I send a PS file to it. Only hitch I have had has been trying to turn off the duplex printing once I activated it in CUPS. Don't think this is a printer problem. Prints pretty fast once it gets going. I did download and install (I think) the HP driver. Richard
