Yes YOU is far to slooowwww. Despite the apparent fixes with wget and firewalls, why is it so slow? The old yast was so quick before.

Using KDE 3.1 without any major problems here, Konq works fine apart from on nwn.bioware.com. Is this 3.1 release an official SuSE release? Or did someone throw some packages together? Matt

Yes, this is a big problem and SuSE should definitely get off their ass and fix it.

I have had no problems with my Konqueror 3.1.0. In fact, I have abandoned Mozilla 1.2.1 as my primary browser for it. It's unfortunate that you are having such problems with it, but the KDE 3.1 packages for 8.1 are -not- official yet. From the SuSE LinKS page: "KDE 3.1 packages for SuSE Linux 8.1 will be available from Feb. 11th." If you (or anyone) is using SuSE Linux 8.1 and wants to upgrade to KDE 3.1, I recommend you wait.

Good to hear this I thought it was a problem with my DSL. It took all afternoon to do an Auto Update for a few fixes and manual didn't work at all. How can I find a list of working servers as many are unresponsive?

I installed 3.1 on SuSE 8.1 with the KDE site rpms. After lots of trouble with Konqueror freezing on web sites it seems to have healed itself, but there are two big problems with KDE that my kids have: a. The text on some web sites doesn't render right: all upper case letters and some lower case ones are shown as rectangles, no matter what font or encoding is selected. I can copy this text and paste it into an xterm and all the characters are displayed fine. This happens regularly with messages on the yahoo groups site. b. Kmail will let me set readable fonts but, if I do, will not display html mail messages. If I set it to allow html the fonts are so small that I can't read the message. Henry Harpending

Works for me, I got 3.1 from the KDE site and like it a lot. I've got it on three machines including my workstation at work. -- ============================================================== Glenn Holmer (Linux registered user #16682) -------------------------------------------------------------- If you make a small change to a program, it can result in an enormous change in what the program does. I have had the same sucess as Glenn. I downloaded the SuSE rpm build from the KDE site into a directory and bulk installed it with rpm -Uvh --Force and everything works fine except I can't execute konqueror as superuser or it will crash. This is a well documented bug. I can however open a terminal window and issue a xhost +localhost command, then go su, then start konqueror as su and it works fine on my SuSE8.1 system. All, I have a few 7.1 systems that I would like to update to the latest version of SuSE's 7.1 Apache version. SuSE NEVER released KDE 3.1. Such a major piece of software cannot be considered "released" until it is officially included in the distribution and shipped with it. Anyone that has tried to install KDE from source knows that the interactions with the native system are massive, and take forever to fix. The rpms that appear immediately after a KDE release are BOUND to create problems, and those who install them (should) know and accept this fact. The fact that these rpm's are made available on SuSE ftp servers is just a convenience for those users who want to stay bleeding edge, SuSE was always coherent in NOT providing updates through YOU, only security and bug fixes, and I would like them to keep to this policy. fred

And I second what you're saying Fred. You're absolutely correct. The guy complaining, doesn't seem to realize that 'SuSE' doesn't make KDE...The KDE team does. John
