Hi, I'm doing an FTP install from my internal FTP server and during the file copy process the machine hangs and the keyboard blinks. I have reloaded the machine several times and it hangs on different files each time (random lock ups). I have tried different PCs using the same disks and ftp server and haven't seen the same issue. When I do the install I use text mode and the failsafe option. If I reload the same hardware with Red Hat 8.0 it installs fine but I prefer SuSe. Could someone shed so light on this? -Sean

There have been reported in this list many similar crashes, but mostly on installed systems. You should browse the archives of this mail list for details.
From memory, one of the problems is that the option "barrier=none" must be added in fstab to reiserfs partitions - that's has solved the crashes for me. Another one I think was related to the via chipset, but I could be mistaken, I write from memory.
There is a kernel update for those two. Unfortunately, I don't know how you can solve your problem if you can not even install... you might try to install it bare bones, then upgrade the kernel or the fstab, depends. Maybe you can replace the kernel on your local ftp server with the updated one, but I don't know if that will work, that kernel doesn't run till the first reboot... -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
