Hello everyone- I just started working at an ISP in Pennsylvania and am in the process or retiring some old BSD servers in favor of Suse 8.0. I have a few questions....... 1)What is everyone using for smtp services these days? We have a very hacked together sendmail that keeps me up at night. 2)Has anyone ever transfered user accounts from FreeBSD to Linux? 3)Can anyone recommend an email server program that would use MySQL for user authentication? This would spare me from having to import the accounts or create new accounts for customers. Thanks in advance. I am impressed so far with 8.0. -Scott
I prefer Postfix... it has a simple (relative to sendmail) config, a small footprint, it 's very fast and secure. In transferring the accounts, the bigger issue it more likely the client interface. Assuming this is a standard ISP that only supports pop, the questions would be what pop server are you running and how are user accounts maintained? - Herman On Mon, 8 Jul 2002, Scott wrote: ->Hello everyone- -> ->I just started working at an ISP in Pennsylvania and am in the process or ->retiring some old BSD servers in favor of Suse 8.0. How is Postfix in dealing with spam? I have the anti-virus that comes with Suse 8 for sendmail, is there something similar for Postfix? Thanks, -Scott At 09:57 AM 7/8/2002 -0700, Herman L. Knief wrote:

There are a number of tools both for AV as well as SPAM... search the list for Spam Assasin and others. - Herman On Mon, 8 Jul 2002, Scott wrote: ->How is Postfix in dealing with spam? Personally we use Exim (www.exim.org) which is extremely simple to
configure, yet very powerful and feature rich.
It has the usual features to prevent SPAM, and guard against viruses etc.
Kind regards,
Paul

I personally use qmail. Its (imho) fairly easy to set up plus it's fast and reliable. Qmail never stops working, hogs, or anything like that. The only times that box is restarted/halted is when I need to clean out dust from it or when I have moved it to anothe room. Regards, /diffuze -- tina "diffuze" johnsson web: http://diffuze.com

Another voice for qmail. I had big troubles trying to configure Mailman to work properly on the server. At the end I realized that the problem is in sendmail. Installed qmail (Dave Sill's qmail handbook is a great read) and don't want to look back. With qmail, imho, it's possible to understand what's going on, but I didn't have such luck with sendmail.
