Just an idea: Is caps-lock active ? Was caps-lock active when you entered the root password ? You can check if the password is valid or not by loging in as root via one of the console devices (e.g. [Alt]-[Ctrl]-[F1] ... -[F6]) or via a terminal emulation (system maintenace mode). did you run online update ? there **was** a bug in the yast sudo module that can cause this behaviour, fixed a month ago.

We have got similar problems if you use any local character not in the english standard keyboard. To work around this, go to yast in a console and get to system language and setup your locale HTH -- Un Saludo. Carlos Lorenzo Matés
