Not sure if this is exactly what your asking, but let me describe my setup, I'm using AfterStep and really like the asmail program shows how many incoming mails I have, spinning logo, etc.. Anyway, I use fetchamil to grab my e-mail from my various shells, and it stores it in the usual location. I use netscape to view and download them from the localhost which basically clears the /var/spool/mail/user file.
