Well no this time I have to disagree. I do not want to join a list full of discussions around the SHORT POSTS that I loved to read on HERE for ages. I would love the old simple short posts back in here. regardzzzz -- *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨¨*¤ =Oliver@home= *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨*¤

I'd love to see Fred post on this list also with the understanding that there are no replies, discussion, or comments. Just Fred's post.

Somehow, I miss Fred comments, but I think it is realy better the way it is now. I had less time the last weeks to read my mails and the accumulating hundreds of mails in these "OT" megathreads were annoying (first time). Come on, folks, Message filtering has been discussed intensly enough on this list and you can do more with that than deleting unwanted messages. <hint!> ;-) Subscribe the other list and set up your "get Fred's messages" filter. Fred (and quite a few of us) moved to the other list because of the comments of a few on this list. Now there are comments saying that some miss his posts, and want copies. Personally I do not want duplicate messages on two of the lists I subscribe to, and before anyone points out that I do not have to read them, that is exactly the point that was made previously to those who complained and which led to the war of words resulting in the split. Keep to the previously "agreed" policy: no OT postings, and if a thread starts to get out of hand it should move to the other list and/or personal (not list) postings. Terence

Just so Terence, and therein lies the problem. As one of the more vocal users on the OT topics, it was decided to move/start a list for OT due to Mads wanting to settle down the # of OT posts. Mads didn't really care about it for much more than the amount of bandwitdh being sucked at a time of the new release and the high demands on the ftp server at SuSE. At this time some of the SuSE list users expressed their dislike of the posts. Frankly, Chris Klippel offered to serve the list and many us that participating in the OT topics on the SuSE list thought it a good idea to move OT to lx-talk to keep the peace. It doesn't really matter to me what list the post comes from - as long as I can get the posts I desire. I still sub to the SuSE list and use it for the technical info. One of the other Lx-Talk users stated that the new list was nice because we can post freely without wondering who might be offended/bothered. I have to agree with this. It is nice to post on a list where no one cares that It is not "on topic". Now, hopefully, this satisifies those how want the OT posts and those that want only SuSE list posts - and then those, like myself, that want both. Just MHO, Cheers. Hello Greek Geek, Yes, as I have wrily ;) pointed out, bandwidth considerations rapidly become absurd when, I guess, the total bandwidth consumed by OT posts in a year has by now been surpassed by this absurd and protracted discussion about the OT posts. Not to mention the distributed inefficiency of annoyance and consternation. The solution was precipitate and draconian, perhaps, but there you have it. The most we can do now is revel in the absurdity of continued discussion of the issue. An absurdity which you and I have just amplified. ;) Corvin -- Corvin Russell <corvinr@sympatico.ca>

This may help you, as root: # smbpasswd -a phil (set your password) # smbpasswd -U phil (set the same passwd) On your windows login, use the password you set in the linux box. I'm not really sure if this correct, but in my case I have access to the shares. My problem is: I've a printer attached to my linux box (using cups), I made it available as a samba share. On the win98 box, I see the printer, but when I try to set it up, I get an error message saying it is offline. However, I've a win98 running under vmware on the linux box, I've no problem setting the printer in there, it works fine. It seems problem with the win98 box. It's because M$ decided that passwords transmitted in cleartext over a network was a bad idea. They were right, for a change. This basically means that you have to encrypt your SMB password so that you can log in properly. Glad to hear that you are up and running :) -Steven

hmmm, just caught up with this thread & *gasp-shock-horror* (polite version.)
:-) Well, since I suspect you must have missed the OT discussion about OT posts a week or two a go, let me mention that the new LinuX-Talk mailing list is located at lx-talk@big7.net . Hopefully, any and all who enjoyed OT posts will sign up (including "lurkers") so that we can leave those who can _only_ talk specifically about SuSE technical issues to their discussions. I suspect they will eventually realize that even they miss this stuff that made SLE so lively.
Why not set up a "Tech only" list, so that those who have the suitable austerity of character, can serve this narrow purpose????
That would make more sense - the majority seems to like SLE the way it was, versus the small minority who didn't. Why the majority ended up having to move part of their dicussion over to lx-talk doesn't make sense. C'mon, it wasn't even close enough that the U.S. electorial system would have given the minority the win (btw, I _like_ that system)! -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. posts a week or two a go, let me mention that the new LinuX-Talk mailing list is located at lx-talk@big7.net . Hopefully, any and all who enjoyed OT posts will sign up (including "lurkers") so that we can leave those who can _only_ talk specifically about SuSE technical issues to their discussions. I suspect they will eventually realize that even they miss this stuff that made SLE so lively.
What will likely happen is sooner or later people will start posting the exact same stuff that has always been posted. So instead of having it posted to one mailing list it will be going to two. Spliting a list in two rarely splits the volume. I'll bet within three months the total amount of messages will be higher then before. At least until somebody complains about the OT posts and the volume spikes again. Somebody really should ban complaints about OT posts they waste too much bandwidth. Nick

Dear Corvin (and also Nick!) ! This is acknoledged and I could not agree more than you already did. (Check my english, I am strongly improving ahahaha) Now, as long as this discussion lasts, I see no point for the second ML, just because the topics come up here again and again. ==== Thus, looking at the horizon, I can clearly see it coming: People will learn to set up filters, the others will improve their quoting. No, that nothing still jitters, and we shall all stop moaning. People will again become friendly, breaking their lines at 68, just all people do like me for we will all be mate'. OT will be private mail, discussions shorted up, to our all hail, we shall sum things up! Keep ourselves at all costs short will bring nobody to abort this cool beloved list that my beloved home ist... Oh, it's about to get worse, so I will stop this here. Haha this is all because we had the POWERBOAT WM here at my place and from the afterdark-party I am yet drunk so bear with me.... Cheers! I'd love to see Fred post on this list also with the understanding that there are no replies, discussion, or comments. Just Fred's post.
I back that up; he could Cc suse-list, whenever he posts to the "discussion" list.

Perhaps Fred should just set up his own mailing list? Majordomo is on the SuSE CDs ya know ;-) ---------------------------------------------------- Jonathan Wilson System Administrator Cedar Creek Software http://www.cedarcreeksoftware.com Central Texas IT http://www.centraltexasit.com

I do not want to join a list full of discussions around the SHORT POSTS that I loved to read on HERE for ages.
That's not _all_ that is on lx-talk, it's anything related to Linux/OSS/etc. that would be considered OT here. It's enjoyable, and low volume too, btw.
I would love the old simple short posts back in here.
Me too, however I doubt that is going to happen. :-( -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Butler Universal Networks Information Tech.
