During install of SuSE 7, I had numerous "CPIO: BAD MAGIC NUMBER" errors. Could this possibly mean I had damaged CDs also? What makes these other people think they had bad CDs? After getting the error, I would try again and again and again, and it would finally finish installing the package I had the errors on. Although, a couple would not install at all, no matter what. Hi,
I thought I had bad CD's because I kept getting error messages trying to
install apache and acroread, among other programs. I even changed CD-Rom
drives, to no avail. This was with the error in httpd.conf message coming
up.
I went back to the store and exchange the package, only to find when I
returned home that I was getting the same messages. Obviously something
else. I went back and reformatted the disk (a 9gig Quantum SCSI on a Tekram
390 card. This whole thing has been quite an experience. At first I got
the "we expect x-heads and y-sectors so if you're using an OS other than
DOS, look out" message (well, ok, words to that effect), which I found I had
to fix by disabling the >1 (or was it 2?)gig support parameter.
Then I had the problems with errors installing from the CD. Most
disconcerting is that I run the SuSE box as a server, connected to a cable
modem at one end, which uses a 3com 3c509 card. No sign of this card on the
boot disk, or the modules disk. But the first time around SuSE seemed to be
able to find the card after setup, and I had the network up and running, at
least for a while. Oh, and yast2 hung my machine (a cyrix 200 with 96
megs).
And startx wouldn't run for me as a regular user, only as root. And
when it ran (nifty exploding bombs wallpaper, I couldn't find netscape, nor
anything else that looked like a network browser.
I also got messages about segmentation faults, and what was it, a whole
bunch of messages about some process respawning too fast, wait five minutes.
So I blew everything away and reinstalled again. And this time SuSE can't
seem to find the 3c509 *or* the NE2000 card.
So right now it will boot up fine, no httpd.conf errors, but the
dhcpclient isn't doing so well, since it thinks it only has lo to play with.
Not a very pleasant way to spend two days (so far).

Its a real shame that 7.0 ( "seems" ) to be producing so many problems because when it is finally working there are so many good things to be said about it. I am extremely pleased with the manuals for newcomers, I suggested a while back that some sort of documentation for newbies as to what their system was capable of was a good idea. ( sell yourself ). And I am really pleased with the integration into Windowmaker which Im sure wasnt there before. Compiling code seems to be much easier this time with less failed dependancies Like you, Ive had the ethernet card go missing ( solutions turn of pnp os in the bios ). My Epson USB printer refuses to be configured. and Ive also had the cdrom drive refuse to eject. Help system not configured properly. Oddities since these were all fine in 6.4. As I said its a shame, because I believe there are many good things in the 7.0 box and Im sure that a lot of time and effort have gone into the release. Unfortunately the more grandiose the release. the less 'problems' we expect to face on installation. It must be a difficult transition time for Linux distributors as they are called upon to make bolder strokes with their releases without the time to create the infrastructure/systems that one expects behind them. There are more things to be counted. SuSE support told me that I had to use XFree 3.3.x to run Quake3 ( XFree on my machine always blurted out and left the TNT2 in a bad state ) but all that was needed was to upgrade the XF86-4 to 4.0.1. I'd say they have good marketing ( maybe marketing is being pushy on the packagers ? ), good packagers that seem to have been in a hurry, and somewhat whimsy support. That last one they need to clean up a tad :-) The books are extremely good ! ( 6.4 also had good books, but these were better ) There are a lot of minor issues that I've seen with 7.0 ( minor being easily fixable once you have the know-how, being a relatively small problem for me, but somewhat a bigger problem for many of my friends ) that could have been avoided. I think SuSE is just having it's first encounter with the BORG-Marketing droids. Lets hope they won't be assimilated ;-) Keep up the good work SuSE ! You've done it so far, and you CAN keep doin' it -tosi -----Original Message----- From: diddy@diddyland.com [mailto:diddy@diddyland.com]On Behalf Of dids Sent: 10. oktober 2000 09:17 To: SuSE Linux Mailing list Subject: Re: [SLE] SuSE 7 BAD DISKS? its a pity

Yes, I have. And with good experience. I'm running Quake3, Heretic II and other OpenGL software w/o problems with the XF4.0.1 update. It's without doubt a better compilation than the XF4.0 that comes with SuSE 7.0. ( downloaded from ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/X/XFree86-4.0.1-SuSE/suse70 )

No, I'm not joking ( well, not alltogether at least... :) . Look at microsoft. Not all bad software is due to bad programmers, more of it comes from marketing pushing too hard on the coders/packagers to release, and microsoft has an excellent marketing division ( which explains a lot ;-) - They too have their excellent software. Like.... uhh... solitaire.exe ;-) -tosi -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
