I finally got apt-get to run and proceded to do an upgrade. It said there was a confilct with an earlier version of tcl so I removed it and reran. It seemed to work OK. Now there is a new uglier version of kmail, and an even uglkier version of kvirc, and knode is still not the way I want it. I tried using yast to clean these up but it it gives an error. How can I revert to a previous version. How can I get the header view, group view and article view all together in knode? At the moment the header and article appear together and the group view and tool bar appear in another window. Just noticed that spell check, and gpg plugins got lost during the upgrade too.

Did you edit your sources.list or just use the default file that comes in the RPM's? If you use the generic sources.list you have to many directories in it. Check your sources.list against this..which is mine. And it works. Apt should have just upgraded KDE to 3.1.3-75 builds and the files they need. But again check your sources.list (/etc/apt/sources.list). rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/8.2-i386 base update kde3-stable kde packman packman-i686 security xfree86 usr-local-bin The list of directories above should work correctly and have no overlaps such as the patch rpm directories and all the user contrib stuff..with the acception of usr-local-bin and packman which I use. This should work for you. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.

Thanks Ben. Things are a bit better. KDE is now back on the desktop. knode is still 2 windows but if I make one small it's workable. I found the setting in kvirc so it's OK but it won't do 2 sessions at a time any more. I used to connect to 2 servers at a time. My screensaver is no longer there. I used to have a slide show and it's gone. It appears under the system menu but not the desktop menu. When I try and go to yast I get a message that libkcm_yast2.la is not in the path. It's slowly comng back up I'm now wonder is if a distro-upgrade miught solve the troubles?

It might help. I can't promise anything because I've had issues with the last build/update of KDE that had absolutely nothing to do with apt..I found kscd and all the kio_audio plugins missing from the last build and it's quite possible this build has issues with the IRC program and news program which you're having issue with. I don't if it's the build of KDE as related to those programs because I use epic to IRC and Pan as my news reader...both I've compiled myself. You might want to email the package maintainer about the weirdness your suffering with these apps and see if the problems are able to be reproduced. You can get the package maintainer by doing this.. rpm -q --changelog <insert your favorite kde rpm here> So it would be kdenetwork3-news-3.1.3-62 that you can find this in.
