RE: [SLE] 8.2 ftp-installation not working behind a firewall?

Hello everybody,
I tried installing Suse 8.2 via ftp from several servers. However Yast alwayscomes up with an error when trying to assemble the software packages. Package-data could not be read from installation media...
Has anyone tried to install Suse via ftp yet and got the same error, or is it just being behind a firewall, as there were some issues with YOU regarding this? Suse 8.1 installation via ftp works fine.
I am having the same problem, with a twist... I cannot directly connect to any ftp mirror with the 8.2 install...if I use the squid proxy on another machine in my local net, I can connect and then I get as far as you did. My firewall/router (Netgear box) is not set up to deny any outgoing FTP from this install machine, either. I didn't have time to delve too deeply, I had to go to work...
Regards,
Sven

I wrote an email to ftpadmin@suse.com yesterday, I do not think that I will get an answer though. Mybe if some more people write to suse they take care of this. I have read of people who installed 8.2 via ftp, I guess they did not use a proxy and/or a firewall. Is there mybe some other email-address one could write to? Would be nice to get this sorted. Sven

I *always* answer. I just haven't had a chance to look into yet. -- -ckm

Ooops, well, shame on me, expecting less from SuSE! I guess I got too used to unfriendly software companies. Sorry for that! I tried it again and the only thing I found was that modprobe could not find nls_cp437 and nls_iso8859-1. If I can help to solve this issue just let me know, at the moment I do not know what other information I could provide that would be useful to you, other than included in this thread. I think that the suspision that there was somehting wrong on the ftp-server, lined out in my email, is wrong, as it seems to work for others. I hope SuSe get's this to work as nicely as it does with the 8.1 ftp-install which runs fine, do not ask me why. Apologies again for questioning your commitment to the users. No need to answer my email to you, I will just stick to the mailinglists and see if this can be resolved. Sven
I did three full installs today from ftp.suse.com and didn't run into any problems (well, forgot to insmod reiserfs once in the full manual test). The problem with the ftp install (and YOU) in 8.1 was that wget defaulted to active ftp but was resolved. If you could ftp the files in /var/log/YaST2/ to ftp.suse.com:/pub/incoming and drop me a mail when they're there it will help. Thanks, -- -ckm
If yast can't connect to the installation ftp server it gives the error that the package couldn't be found. Not the best error but not entirely untrue either. I'll file a bug right now but in the meantime click 'retry' a few times until you get a connection will work. -- -ckm
