CF Memory Card in PCMCIA Adapter
What is the best way to set up read/write to a compact flash memory card (as a disk device) in SuSE 8.1? I used Mandrake 8.2 last, and the card showed up as hde and I was able to mount it and r/w with no problem. I did always get an error on boot that hde was "not a valid block device". I there a better way to set this device up, say as a hotplug (not that I know how to do that yet, but am willing to learn). Edit /etc/pcmcia/config and change every instance of "ide_cs" to "ide-cs". The name of the driver changed somewhere in the 2.4 kernel series. -- ================================================== Glenn Holmer (Linux registered user #16682) -------------------------------------------------- "You may think this is the finest pearl But it's only cardboard balls, seamed in glue Overwhelming technique; done through diligence" -------------------------------------------------- -Captain Beefheart, "Best Batch Yet" ==================================================

1)Insert combinedCFcard/PCMCIA adapter into PCMCIA slot. 2)Reboot 3)TYpe: /sbin/fdisk -l The CFcard will show up in the listing - probably as /dev/hde If SuSE Linux has not aded a corresponding line to /etc/fstab, do it yourself. You'll need to assign a mountpoint to the device. SuSE Linux will want to put it in /media/hde, but that's up to you. -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@VISI.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE

If you have one of those "card readers" plug it in w/ a card in the slot ... It should show up as a drive which can be mounted etc... mine shows as /media/sdc1 ( it's a 3 slot sized reader ) If I put in another card also , those show usp as /media/sdc2 etc... I didn't have to do anything at all in 8.1 Kudos and Thanks to all the SuSE folks who worked on that ... Now , if they just create that sort of support for "fire wire" all will be well here <G> /Warning: OT , a bit below : (I'm drooling over a maxtor external drive 256 GIGs at the same price ;a tad more than $250 dollars US as the older 120gig version version... ) W/ firewire it *should* be faster than USB . /warning: OT, End -- j afterthought: !edis gnorw eht morf siht ta gnikool era uoY
