Look under the development and source section, the "z" stuff is complete source for all the packages. So, if you can't find it then look there. Open YaST2 then use the filter to pick "Package Groups". Then look under "Development" and then "Sources". The two packages you are probably looking for is "kernel-source" version 2.4.19.SuSE-49. The other package is "Linux" version 2.4.19-2 and is described as the Rest of the kernel source code", where as the prior source mentioned (2.4.19.SuSE-49) is described as "The sources of the SuSE kernel"/"Linux Kernel sources with many Improvements and Fixes" - this would most likely be the one with certain things specific to SuSE, like the "makecloneconfig" command that will allow to add things to the kernel and still keep the rest as it was installed otherwise (that's if I got that part right). Anyway they are there. Also if you have a pentium 3/4 or an Athlon then there also additional kernel/features, aka k_dflt, k_athlon, etc... which are specific to certain cpu archs and then other modules like km_bios, km_pcmi, etc. for other specific archs/setups. Remember that after you update the kernel rpm run "mk_initrd". HTH, Curtis. On Saturday 07 December 2002 23:39, Paul Burke wrote:

Use Search. tell it to look in descriptions too (by default it does not). Then search for kernel. One or more should turn up the says kernel sources. Warning: installing a new kernel is not trivial. Whatever you do, don't forget to run lilo after it's installed. I strongly recommend backing up your current kernel too. Oh, and if you DO back itup, back up /lib/modules/<current kernel verion> because installing a new kernel will often wipe those out. Then you'd be stuck even if you had backup your vmlinuz and initrd :-D JW -- ---------------------------------------------------- Jonathan Wilson System Administrator Cedar Creek Software http://www.cedarcreeksoftware.com
Just a note. If you using 8.1 and have let the installation use the default then the boot loader isn't lilo but GRUB and in that case you don't need to run the lilo command. However, if you reqeusted that lilo be used when you installed the OS then you need to run lilo after running mk_initrd. Cheers, Curtis. On Sunday 08 December 2002 00:49, JW wrote:

Try using pin for finding rpms, it's better than yast for that job. +++ cer@nimrodel:~> pin kernel pin 0.26 - package info for kernel ------------------------------------------------------------------ *** no rpm named kernel installed ------------------------------------------------------------------ maybe just a typo? what about this: NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123 kernel-source-2.4.19.SuSE-49 maybe better restart with another option? greping anyway ... ------------------------------------------------------------------ *** zgrep kernel /usr/share/pin/ARCHIVES.gz ------------------------------------------------------------------ ---> ./suse/i586/NVIDIA_kernel-0.8-293.i586.rpm ---> ./suse/i586/kernel-source-2.4.19.SuSE-49.i586.rpm ---> ./suse/nosrc/kernel-source-2.4.19.SuSE-49.nosrc.rpm ++- So, kernel-source-2.4.19.SuSE-49 is the one you want, and it gives you the path above... -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
