Yes, I've used it for years with a number of OSes. Works fine, although there is a bit of a learning curve. I'm using an older version (4.something). On my system, SC boots to LILO when Linux is selected from the OS selection menu. LILO is installed in the Linux root partition as recommended in the SC manual, which gives detailed instructions. You can configure LILO to skip its boot menu so as not to be presented with a second set of OS selections. If you want to use SC in place of LILO, the version that I use does not work without it (that I am aware of), or at least does not discuss doing so. A newer release might. You might try the V Communications web site at www.v-comm.com. Regards, Rudder
I use SC200 on 3 machines. If you are planning to use multiple OSes (and here I mean 3 or more) on the same machine or are worried about protecting the OSes currently installed it is a good way to go. I have 1 system on which there are currently 8 OS installed and have had no problem booting any, nor have I had to edit any files or reinstall because of MBR corruption. $49 for a great bootloader and a good partitioning program is 1 of the better software deals out there. Yeah, it's nice. But to be honest, I think for basic boot management XOSL (www.xosl.org) is nicer looking (a full fleged GUI with mouse support and windowing system), and has a better price tag - FREE! -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. I have used it with Caldera 2.4, SuSE 6.4, and SuSE 7.0 with no problems. In all 3 cases I was dual booting with Win98. *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 7.0 Professional KMail 1.0.29.2 Bryan S. I am still a Linux newbie so when making a multi-boot system I format the hard drive with Partition Magic (PM) and then choose a boot loader (System Commander (SC), PM boot loader, NT4 boot manager, or Linux LILO). I find the user manuals from PM and SC extremely helpful in developing techniques that work. I would suggest always loading all your operating systems before doing any real work on the system. There is always some risk that loading the last system will not work out for some reason and that way you can minimize your time loss. The experienced Linux folks will no doubt disagree with my choice of tools because of leaning too much on Windows products; however it is a way to learn about PCs and be successful in the process. Will be glad to talk off line if you wish. Good luck. Respectfully, Ken Becker ---------- Original Text ---------- From: "Peter B. I'm using System Comander, and it works fine. I need some programs that works only under windooze. And as we all now that "OS" needs to be reinstalled now and then and it just overwrites the MBRso SC is an easy way to get things working as they should. SC recognises Linux partitions just fine. Yes, I did once use a trial version to play with. Works smoothly. You need to have LILO installed in the boot sector of your /boot partition and then give that partition to the Boot manager. BTW, there's an excellent free graphical boot manager available including source code under the GPL, XOSL.
