RE: [SLE] RE: Failure to install SuSe 9.0 on Sony Vaio (glibc-2.3.2-88.i686 failed)
I just tried to find where you "posted" the solution. All I found was a "German" solution. http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2003-Nov/0897.html
That's correct, but I explained the steps in the first para. Ok. for completeness I'll write them out in English here: The PROBLEM is that on my Sony Vaio PCG-C1MGP (mini-laptop) the installation became impassably stuck when RPM attempted to install this file: /var/adm/YaST/InstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_0x00000001/MEDIA/suse/i686/glibc-2.3.2-88.i686.rpm When it should use this file: /var/adm/YaST/InstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_0x00000001/MEDIA/suse/i586/glibc-2.3.2-87.i586.rpm It failed with the following message: package glibc-2.3.2-88 is intended for a i686 architecture Continuing (using 'IGNORE') was a waste of time as such basic utilities as grep, gawk etc. etc. also failed to install. The strange thing about this, is that the glibc.* file is the only file in the i686 directory (apart from the MD5SUMS file), and up until this point RPM had been merrily installing i585 packages. This being a vanilla SuSe 9.0 install I was a bit surprised to say the least, although everybody keeps telling me not to install a dot-zero release (I must have itchy fingers :) I had recognised the problem, from scouting around with a root window behind the install session, but couldn't figure out how to remove the errant i686 rpm without reburning the entire CD-ROM, which I was understandably trying to avoid. Rüdiger Meier came up with the bright idea of 'mount'ing over the offending directory and placing the correct (i586) rpm in it's place. Like this: >export MEDIA=/var/adm/YaST/InstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_0x00000001/MEDIA/suse/ >mount /dev/fd0 $MEDIA/i686 >cd $MEDIA/i686 >cp $MEDIA/i586/glibc-2.3.2-87.i586.rpm . >md5sum $MEDIA/i586/glibc-2.3.2-87.i586.rpm > MD5SUMS > And then continuing with the Yast2 installation with a 'RETRY' and everything was fine after that. My vaio finally has an out-of-the-box functional hotswap usb floppy, 1024x480 screen support, and the network card works without having to patch and recompile the kernel or anything daft like that. :-)
However, i noticed that you didn't "reply" to your posts, so in the archieves, rather than being "threaded", each one is a separate post. That's because even though I'm subscribed to the list, I never recieved a message from myself, only from other people (ie; replies came through but not the initial post). And where I wanted to extend what I had already written, I had to mail another (new) message. I'd also cross-posted to both German and English lists and gotten rightfully flamed for doing so, so I wanted to start a new thread too.
I agree, it was messy, sorry.
You make it tough on us... Gar
