[opensuse] recommendation for dual boot setup with Win/Bitlocker
Hi, seems I'm not quite up to date with modern hardware installations. What I've got: - a modern new laptop with UEFI, SecureBoot, Windows 10, Bitlocker encrypted I got Leap 42.3 installed in UEFI mode meanwhile after workarounding a few things. (like https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=939456) Now I can boot openSUSE as expected but Windows does not boot from the grub menu because Bitlocker lost its trust apparently. I found a workaround to boot into Windows again by using the BIOS EFI boot menu where I can select the Windows Boot Loader before grub is loaded. But this is a tedious procedure. What is the best practice to be able to boot into one simple menu by default where I can start openSUSE or Windows without issues? I don't have any experience with bitlocker. On my UEFI box, I rarely use the grub menu to boot into Windows. Instead, in openSUSE, I run the following command before rebooting: efibootmgr -n 1 I run that at a root command line. The result is that it boots straight into Windows. I should explain. The UEFI boot entries are numbered. You can use efibootmgr -v to list them. And for me, it happens that the windows boot entry has number 1 (or, really, 0001). What the first command that I gave does, is tell the UEFI firmware that the next boot is to be from boot entry 1. This isn't what you asked. But I'm pretty sure that it will boot you into Windows with bitlocker. And it should be more convenient than what you are currently needing to do. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
