Hello I got my DVD player going on Linux! But now, I've bought the cables, hooked it up to the television... and want to play movies there, but it's not working. I've followed the instructions in the TV_OUT file from nvidia, but it doesn't seem to work. The picture on TV changes, and the colors to as I change something on my X server, but nothing can be seen (not even blurry). I tried it on windows, and there it seems to work. I think it might be something with my refresh rate ... Has anyone gotten this to work? My config AMD Athlon with SuSE 7.1, kernel 2.4.2, XFree 4 (from distro), nvidia drivers. Used resolution for DVD's 640x480 and 800x600 Asus V7100 geforce2MX COMBO AGP video-card with video-out. Connected to the VCR using a SCART cable which is connected to TV-set via antenna-cable (my TV is about 20 years old, without SCART offcourse :-( ) Thanks for any help! Kind regards Guy
Wow, I haven't heard of SCART in a long time. I don't think I've even seen a SCART socket/cable while I've been here in the US. I think it's pretty much S-Video these days. Have you tried using an S-Video cable or RCA type ? I'm not sure where you are in the world, but here in the US the max resolution is 640x480 on a TV, whereas on a PAL TV in Europe you should be able to get 800x600. Not sure what the resolution would be for SECAM though. US TVs work at 30fps whereas PAL in Europe runs at either 24fps or 25fps, I can't quite remember, so Europe has much better resolution, but a lower refresh rate. You may have to turn your refresh rate for the X server down to these lower levels in order to get any output. It's possible that the Windows driver does this for you automatically. This probably didn't help, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Bye for now, Stuart. -----Original Message----- From: suse-linux-e-return-62524-stuart=yorkshirepudding.com@suse.com [mailto:suse-linux-e-return-62524-stuart=yorkshirepudding.com@suse.com]O n Behalf Of Guy Van Sanden Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2001 7:40 AM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: [SLE] Playing DVD's on TV Hello I got my DVD player going on Linux! Thanks for your answer Stuart I'm sorry, forgot to mention, I live in Belgium, we use PAL-B or PAL-H. SCART is all you can use over here nowadays... specially for connecting a video-card to a computer. It's SCART or nothing... My TV is way to old for that, I'm lucky my wife thought of connecting the entire thing to the VCR. In the shop, they told me to buy a new TV... I tried both resolution, with about the same result, static with vague shapes in it... and a high pitched resonating sound... The windows driver sets thing up automatically when I slect the TV-Out, it's using the specific ASUS drivers, not the generic ones from nvidia. Are you doing something similar (maybe with another standard)? If yes, could you mail me your XF86Config file? If I get this up and running, I'll write some sort of howto... Bye Guy

Xine, but I prefer videolan (although you have to download videolan seperately). Watched two movies over the weekend on it...Worked best through SDL. Matt -- "The only thing complex about Linux are the users themselves." On Tue, 26 Jun 2001, Linux - User wrote:

Could it be that your card transmits in NTSC instead of glorious PAL?
No, in this case, he would have a black and white picture. Patrick

Sorry... my mistake The combo card has those connectors, but in the stores in my region, the only cables they had were SCART. I don't know if that's any different somewhere else. I know the stores in my neigbourhood are not very good... for a lot of parts, you pay double the price you can find arround bigger cities (like Antwerp). Thanks Guy

Hello I'm looking for a database server, that would emulate M$ Access server, and thus allow Win-98 Access SW to connect to Linux-box. Is there any available? I have not found any reference to a database server capable of emulating Access in any documents (MySql, Postgres etc...) I'm running SuSE 7.0, and 7.2 is coming soon.... Thank you Jaakko Tamminen Finland
Hi, You can use any database supporting ODBC. You can use MySQL for instance in your Linux box and install mysql ODBC drivers to your Win clients. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jaakko Tamminen <jtamminen@satabaana.net> To: <suse-linux-e@suse.com> Sent: Friday, June 29, 2001 3:23 AM Subject: [SLE] Windows Access compatible database

I am unfamiliar to SQL so bear with me. Is there a way to run it from console only? If not, anyone know such a database app? Àll suggestions appreciated, also in PM if you prefer. TIA! -- *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨¨*¤ =Oliver@home= *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨*¤
Hi, This is driving me mad mad mad... Installation of 7.2 on a laptop 30G drive After installation via dvd (all seemed to be ok). on reboot.... used full disk / = 3G /usr = 10G swap = 1G /opt = 8 G /var = 4G /boot = 500M lilo = MRB Although /boot seems excessive I tried it anyway Problems on reboot SuSE still wants the floppy in drive A. Its looking for a modules floppy It still asks for disk 1 to be inserted in the CD drive. Now all I get is the install screen again and again... How do I boot via my MRB without the need of a floppy ? Regards Matt (I have used versions 5, 6.x's and 7.x's too with no problems).
