run the installation as user, not logged in as root at the console, but as user on X. Josephine

When I run the installation as user I get this: Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: XDM authorization key matches an existing client! (firefox-bin:4127): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

Or "xhost +root" to give root access to the X server, "su -X" etc. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====

This is, I think, the problem a lot of people had with firefox this time around. The usual way to ensure that it works is this (IIRC): xhost +0 firefox [Quit firefox] xhost - HTH John -- John Pettigrew Headstrong Games john@headstrong-games.co.uk Fun : Strategy : Price http://www.headstrong-games.co.uk/ Board games that won't break the bank Fields of Valour: 2 Norse clans battle on one of 3 different boards

By default only the user has authority to connect to the X server, that's the way it's structured for security. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====

Sure, but that doesn't explain why firefox suddenly stopped working with this release (having worked fine before), requiring 'xhost +' for its first run only. Did you read the rest of the thread? It was explained. http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/projects/mozilla/firefox/READ... Because of missing registration features in firefox 0.9.x you have to start firefox as root the first time after installation. If you get a message like -----8<------------------snip--------------8<-------------- Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: XDM authorization key matches an existing client! ----->8------------------snap-------------->8-------------- you have to disable the X authorization with command 'xhost +' and startup firefox. After the initial startup you can close your X session again by 'xhost -' and you should be able to start firefox from now on without problems. Since it seems difficult, I quoted the url for your benefit. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

Yes, I did - but that msg came through to me *after* I'd sent my msg (and was posted only 20 mins before I posted my message, which is pretty close in mailing list terms). Your answer had not answered the OP's question, which was why I followed it up ("Only the user has authority" is not an answer to "Is firefox or the OS to blame?"). However, as you pointed out, a subsequent message did provide the answer (that it's an error in this release of firefox).
