Re: [opensuse] 11.1 Torrents?
Are there going to be any pre-releases of the torrent files so we can prepare our torrent clients and have things torrenting as soon as it's all official on the 18th?
I don't think so, but there are some unofficial torents floating around. I saw two links on openSUSE forums just last night.
Hmmm well the reason I ask was last time, the servers staggered under the load of EVERYONE and their proverbial grandma all trying to download at the same time, and this was discussed/raised on the mailing list... basically the question was asked if we could get the torrent files early (NOT the ISO, just the Torrent file) and have them queue up.. then when the ISOs are officially released, the tracker could be enabled and we could all start the torrents. I don't want unofficial, or prerelease.. just thinking ahead (and maybe a little late?) about the massive hammering the servers will take in 3 days. Put me in agreement with the idea. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

So.... is anyone else reading this thread? Is this something that could be done? Or.... C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The topic is probably more suitable for opensuse-project - it's not really a general user topic. I'm sure it can be done, but is it necessary? Isn't the whole point (of torrent) that there won't _be_ any massive hammering on any servers? As long as there is a good initial feed, the torrents will slowly pick up and that's it. /Per -- /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

OK, I can post on that list. Is it necessary? Well... did you try to go download the Torrent file to start your torrent when 11.0 was released? I couldn't get to the server for 3 days - OK I wasn't trying every 30 seconds for 3 days straight, but every time I'd go to try and get the torrent, I'd get timeouts. I could go get it from Mininova, PirateBay etc, but... I prefer to get something like this from a reliable source rather than the dubious torrent sites. Providing the torrent early without enabling the tracker means that our BitTorrent clients would just idle until the tracker was "on". It also means that the regulars here could immediately start assisting in the seeding without also having to hammer the openSUSE website hoping that they can get in long enough to grab the Torrent file. I didn't mean to say you were off-topic, just that you might be getting better answers or more interest there.

Yes, I retrieved the torrent files (ppc,x86_64 and i386) and added them to my permanently active btpd client. I don't remember if it was right after the release, and I didn't really watch over it, but I'm sure I had the DVD downloaded within a few hours. I'll try and get it started as soon as possible this time.

I don't know if I did or didn't - I just add it to the list, and leave it to run overnight. Here is what I'm currently seeding:
btcli list NAME NUM ST HAVE SIZE RATIO openSUSE-11.0-DVD-i386-iso 0 S. 100.0% 4.29G 34.81 openSUSE-11.0-DVD-x86_64-iso 2 S. 100.0% 4.33G 38.75 openSUSE-11.1-RC1-DVD-i586-iso 24 S. 100.0% 4.27G 14.55 openSUSE-11.1-RC1-DVD-ppc-iso 25 S. 100.0% 3.88G 1.13 openSUSE-11.1-RC1-DVD-x86_64-iso 26 S. 100.0% 4.35G 9.46

I guess one option might be to distribute the torrent file via email. That way people who want to help getting the torrents going could get "in there" very quickly. /Per -- /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I know :-) I posted over there.

Also a good alternative.. eg distribute the Torrent on the project list or something. Anyway, I've raised the question on the project list... guess we'll have to see what happens next. My ISP gives me 60 GiB/month and 1Mbps upload. I think I can donate about 40 GiB to OpenSuse this month. It's not much, I know, but everything helps. -- Amedee -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
