I talked to technical support in SuSE today and the suggested me to run with K-2.2 and I disagree cause I want to take advantage of some 2.4 features, so they told me to download something from the site (I don't remember if they refer to it like patches or updates). Do I really need to do that?, How do I do it?, Am I getting me self into troubles for nothing?, Does it really worth it? Thnx. ===== Ricardo A. It would help a lot if you told us what it is you want etc. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. P. J.

I just want to know if 2.4 does really has some bugs
on it?, if so, what kind of problems am I going to
have?, if need to update the kernel, how hard it is?
and if it really worth to use 2.4 instead of any other
one?
Im a kind of new linux user so Im not use to some
stuff in the environment. My needs are not big deal,
just end user applications (StarOffice, internet,
music, etc, etc) and a little bit of programming
(C++).

Yes.

This ranges from none at all to serious memory leaks on some busy servers to crashes. Rule: the more uptime (server uptime is measured in months) and the busier the system, the more likely you are to see a problem.

In this case go with and have fun with 2.4.

Hi Ricardo I switched to vanilla kernels on my 7.0 box when 2.4 was released. I had never compiled kernels before. My advice is: (1) Read the Kernel section in the SuSE manual (chapter 13 in my manual), and all the cross-references. It really is very helpful. (2) Remember that you will not just be upgrading the kernel - there is the associated stuff like mod-utils and ppp. (3) In my experience compiling and installing kernels is easy. Depending on your hardware, however, sorting out the consequences for your modules and re-writing modules.conf is much more difficult (especially for sound). This may just reflect my inexperience / stupidity - but I have spent 4x as much time and effort on modules as I have on kernels and the documentation (even in the SuSE manual), is not nearly so helpful as it is for kernels. (4) Have fun (it is). Regards, Geoff _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com
